Spartans Put Together Solid Showing at Charity / Alumni Open
YORK, PA – The York College men's track & field team hosted their final home meet of the 2010 campaign on Saturday as the Green and White put on their annual Alumni / Charity Open. The proceeds from the Spartans' meet will go to benefit the relief effort in Haiti.
Rookie standout Jerry Bowers (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) had a fantastic day as he won both the long- and triple-jump events. The freshman posted a 6.64-meter leap in the long jump, his best mark as a collegian, while totaling 12.36 meters in the triple.
Capital Athletic Conference javelin champion Zachary Raywood (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) snagged two throwing victories on Saturday. The junior won the javelin with a 50.68-meter toss, while he set a person-record in the discus with a heave of 38.23 meters.
In his final collegiate home meet, senior Jason Hinkle (York, Pa./Eastern York) put together an impressive effort in the 800. Hinkle posted a 2:01.42 time in the event to take first-place.
The Spartan sprinters continued their terrific season, winning the 100, 200, and 4x100 events. Thomas Kentouris (Belle Harbor, N.Y./Saint Edmund's Prep) snagged the triumph in the 100 with a solid 11.23 time in the finals, while Damian Myers (Windsor, Pa./Eastern York) won the 200 by clocking in a 22.55, just a mere two-tenths of a second off the school record. Kentouris and Myers would join with Ryan Liggitt (Windsor, Pa./Red Lion) and Darren McKoy (Baltimore, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) to capture the 4x100 relay victory by crossing the line at 42.69.
Liggitt took a pair of individual seconds in the 100- and 200-meter races with times of 11.27 and 22.76, respectively.
Matthew Marthaler (Flemington, N.J./North Hunterdon) had a strong day of his own as he won a pair of events. The rookie was victorious in the 400-meter hurdles with a collegiate-best 58.02 while also winning the 110 hurdles.
All-CAC runner Patrick Lestrange (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) nabbed with victory in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a quality 9:51.98. Junior Andrew Friesema (Adamstown, Pa./Cocalico) collected a personal-best 10:03.48 in the event while taking second.
The Green and White added several more second-place finishes during the Alumni / Charity Open.
Myers secured a runner-up spot in the 400 with a 50.10 while Akeem Mackall (Lothian, Pa./Southern) snagged second in the 800.
Ryan Campbell (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) notched a second-place finish in the 110 hurdles while in the 400 hurdles, York swept the top three spots. After Marthaler's win, Ben Edwards (Howell, N.J./Howell) took second (58.06) and Lestrange took third (59.44).
The long jump saw Phil Cavaluchi (Port Carbon, Pa./Pottsville Area) take second with a 6.59-meter leap.
York's talented alums had a solid showing as numerous former Spartans returned for the meet.
Nate Krotzer collected the high jump victory with a 1.94-meter leap while Steve Kinnear took second in the pole vault with a height of 3.96 meters.
The Spartans outstanding throwing alums, Jake Lape, Gary Rynier, and Rich Eperthener, went 1-2-3 in the shot put. Rynier would capture the triumph in the hammer while Lape took second in the discus and hammer. Eperthener and Ryan Clopper took second and third in the javelin, respectively
Jason Kane took third in the triple jump while Luke Fernandez posted a 20:48.59 in the 5,000 meters.
A contingent of Spartans will continue to compete, striving to reach the national meet in Cleveland, Ohio.
