Spartans Give Strong Showing at Paul Kaiser Classic
SHIPPENSBURG, PA – The York College men's track & field squad put on yet another solid performance Saturday at the Paul Kaiser Classic at Shippensburg University. Just one week after the Spartans finished a strong third at the Capital Athletic Conference Championships, the Green and White snagged 13 top-ten finishes in the unscored meet.
The Spartans' 4x100 team continued their season of dominance on Saturday as they backed up their CAC title with another first-place triumph. The combination of Thomas Kentouris (Belle Harbor, N.Y./Saint Edmund's Prep), Damian Myers (Windsor, Pa./Eastern York), Ryan Liggitt (Windsor, Pa./Red Lion), and Darren McKoy (Baltimore, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) posted a terrific 42.11. The squad dropped .42 seconds off their CAC Championships time as they edge ever-closer to the NCAA provisional cut line of 41.90.
York's best two individual finishes came from Myers and sophomore distance runner Patrick Lestrange (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional). Myers posted a fourth-place finish in the 200 meters, which started with 47 participants, as he ran to a quality 22.69. Liggitt took eighth in the event with a 23.17. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Lestrange's signature event, the two-time All-CAC sophomore ran to a 9:56.61 to take fourth-place as he also reduced his time from the league championships. Andrew Friesema (Adamstown, Pa./Cocalico) went on to finish seventh in the event with a 10:04.02.
In the individual sprints, the Green and White placed two runners in the 100-meter final, which began with a field of 62 entrants. Kentouris came in fifth with an 11.28 while Liggitt took sixth. During preliminaries, Myers qualified for the final (11.25) but did not participate in the finals.
Ben Edwards (Howell, N.J./Howell) garnered an eighth-place finish with a 15.87 time in the 110-meter hurdle finals while Jason Hinkle (York, Pa./Eastern York) took another eighth in the 3,000-meter run with a 9:14.67. Hinkle also ran to a 4:07.78 in a strong 1500-meter field.
In the field events, the Green and White took four more top-tens. Freshman long-jumper Phil Cavaluchi (Port Carbon, Pa./Pottsville Area), fresh off his title in the CAC Championships, took fifth on Saturday with a jump of 6.75 meters. Fellow rookie Jerry Bowers (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) took tenth with a 6.50-meter leap while Wid Lyman (Amherst, Mass./Homeschooled) posted 6.28-meter jump to take 15th.
Bowers added another tenth-place finish at the Paul Kaiser Classic as this one came in the triple jump – an event the host Raiders swept by taking the top six spots. The talented freshman put together a trio of bounds for a distance of 12.94 meters.
Mark Ksiezopolski (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) grabbed the Spartans' fourth top-ten in the field events. The sophomore pole-vaulter, who came in the runner-up spot at the CAC Championships, placed tenth with a height of 3.95 meters.
In the throws, Cavaluchi launched the javelin 50.75 meters after coming in second at the event at last weekend's CAC's. Zachary Raywood (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham), who claimed the javelin title at the championships, threw the discus 35.04 meters while teammate Austin Dubos (Ledgewood, N.J./Roxbury) finished just behind Raywood with a 35.03-meter toss.
The Green and White continue their outdoor campaign on Saturday, May 1, when they host the York College Charity / Alumni Open. The meet is slated to begin in York at 9:00 a.m.
