Sprinters Lead Spartans to Home Victory
YORK, PA – The York College men’s track & field team picked up its second victory in a row while competing at home Wednesday. The Spartans outscored Gettysburg College, Washington Adventist and Messiah by earning 105 points.
Leading the way for the Spartans was sophomore sensation Damian Myers (Windsor, Pa./Eastern York). Myers earned victories in the 200 meter dash (22.95), the 400 meter dash (51.65) and was a member of the winning 4 x 100 meter relay.
Joining Myers on the relay were fellow sprinters Thomas Kentouris (Belle Harbor, N.Y./ Saint Edmond’s Prep), Ryan Liggitt (Windsor, Pa./Red Lion), and Darren McKoy (Baltimore, Md./ Mount Saint Joseph). The foursome turned in a time of 43.56.
The Spartans took control of the hurdle events by sweeping the top three positions in both the 110 and the 400-meter hurdles.
In the 110 meter version of the event, the threesome of Brandon McLaughlin (Cape May Court House, N.J./ Wildwood Catholic), Ryan Campbell (Stroudsburg, Pa./ Stroudsburg), and Matthew Marthaler (Flemington, N.J./ North Hunterdon) finished one-two-three respectively.
The Spartan trio of Marthaler, Pat Lestrange (Green Brook, N.J./ Watchung Hills Regional), and Todd Humphrey (Pottsville, Pa./ Pottsville Area) earned the top spots in the 400 hurdles, with Marthaler earning the victory with a time of 59.12.
York didn’t slouch in the field events either, sweeping the top spots again in the long jump with performances from Phil Cavaluchi (Port Carbon, Pa./ Pottsville Area), Jerry Bowers (Pottsville, Pa./ Pottsville Area), and Wid Lyman (Amherst, Mass./ Homeschooled).
Austin Dubos (Ledgewood, N.J./ Roxbury) picked up the win in the shot put giving the Spartans another event victory.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday March 27 at the Goucher Track & Field Classic. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am on the Baltimore, Md. campus.
