Spartans Overcome Weather to Post Solid Home Opener
YORK, PA – The York College men’s track & field squad began their 2010 home slate on Saturday with the York College Spring Opener. Despite the exceptionally rainy and windy conditions, the Spartans picked up six first-place finishes.
For the meet, the Green and White welcomed Lebanon Valley, Alvernia, Hood, Goucher, and Washington & Jefferson to York, Pa.
Senior sprinter Ryan Liggitt (Windsor, Pa./Red Lion) posted a strong day for the Spartans. Liggitt took first in the 200-meter dash with a swift 22.95 while he also helped the Spartans’ 4x100 squad to a 45.31 time as they secured the top-spot in the relay.
In addition to Liggitt, Damien Myers (Windsor, Pa./Eastern York), Tom Kentouris (Belle Harbor, N.Y./Saint Edmund's Prep), and Le Von White (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) ran for the Green and White in that 4x100 victory.
The Spartans also faired exceptionally well in the distance events as they took a pair of firsts. The 3,000-meter steeplechase belonged to Patrick Lestrange (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) who clocked a 10:56.00 in the event. Senior Jason Hinkle (York, Pa./Eastern York) would secure the triumph in the 5,000 meters with a 16:45.27. In that race, Steve Childres (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) and Paul Wallace (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) finished third and fourth, respectively.

Freshman Jerry Bowers (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) tabbed York’s lone field-event triumph with a victory in the long jump. Bowers leapt a distance of 5.94 meters to tally the win.
