Spartans' McKoy Named CAC Rookie-of-the-Year
YORK, PA – York College freshman track and field athlete
Darren McKoy (Baltimore, Md./Mount Saint Joseph)
was named the 2009 Capital Athletic Conference Rookie-of-the-Year
as announced by the conference office on Thursday afternoon.
McKoy had an outstanding CAC Championship on April 18 to help earn
the conference accolade. He placed third in the 100-meter dash,
notching a time of 11.01. He also finished fifth in the 200-meter
dash, crossing the finish line in a time of 22.56.
McKoy was also the anchor of the second-place 4x100 meter relay
team as they clocked in with a combined time of 41.95.
Spartan head coach Erick Camodeca is pleased with
his rookie runner getting the conference accolades.
“Darren has been a key component in much of the team success
we have experienced this year,” says Camodeca. “As much
as track and field is an individual sport, Darren’s
individual success has made the team better, especially in his role
as the anchor of the 4x100 relay team.”
McKoy had a number of strong finishes this year. He won the
100-meter dash at the Paul Kaiser Classic hosted by Shippensburg.
He placed second in the 100 at the Goucher Classic and the
Battleground Relays hosted by Mary Washington.
He was named the CAC Men’s Track and Field Athlete of the
Week for the week ending March 31.
“I think Darren surprised himself as to how well he has
competed this year, especially after getting off to a slow start
during the indoor season,” states Camodeca. “As the
season has progressed and we moved outdoors, he started to gain
confidence in his ability and training. I also credit our
upperclassmen sprinters who push him and kept Darren very
focused.”
As the anchor of the 4x100 relay team, McKoy has led the Spartans
to victories at the Paul Kaiser Classic, the Battleground Relays,
and the Goucher Classic. The foursome has broken the school record
three different times.
McKoy was also a member of the 4x200 relay team that set the York
College indoor record and the outdoor school record while they
finished second at the Battleground relays.
“Given his natural ability and early success as a freshman,
Darren is still wanting to learn how to improve and how to get
better,” says Camodeca. “He has the opportunity to have
a special college career.”
McKoy and his Spartan teammates close out their 2009 regular
season schedule on Saturday, May 2 when they host the York College
Charity Open. The action kicks off at 9:00 am at the Grumbacher
Sport & Fitness Center track.
