Spartans Have a Strong Showing at Salisbury Invitational

SALISBURY, MD-The York College men’s track and field team opened their 2008 outdoor campaign with a strong showing at the Salisbury University Invitational in Salisbury, MD on Saturday. The meet was a non-scoring team meet as the Spartans would have finished at, or near, the top of the field of schools.

The Spartans recorded four individual first place finishes and two top relay finishes. The green and white also had seven runner-up performances in the meet.

Senior Nate Krotzer (Wrightsville, Pa./Eastern York) notched York’s first top finish as he won the high jump with a height of 1.85 meters. Krotzer also finished with a runner-up finish for York as he was second in the 400 meter race with a time of 52.9.

Senior Joe Hill (York, Pa./York Suburban) won the 110 high hurdles as he crossed the line in a time of 15.9. He was joined in the top five by teammates Ryan Campbell (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) and Tyler Hickox (Milton, Pa./Milton Area). Campbell finished fourth with a time of 17.4 while Hickox was fifth with a time of 17.5.

Junior Gabe Henise (York, Pa./Dallastown) picked up a win for the Spartans in the 100 meter dash, recording a time of 11.0. Henise notched another top five as he was fourth in the 200 meter race, crossing the line in a time of 24.7.

Freshman Akeem Mackall (Upper Marlboro, Md./Southian) was the fourth Spartan to post a victory as he won the 800 meter race in a time of 2:04.7.

The Spartan 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay teams both claimed victory in their respective races. The 4x100 relay team recorded a time of 45.8 while the 4x400 team posted a time of 3:40.60.

Among York’s second place finishers were Ryan Liggitt (Windsor, Pa./Red Lion), Gary Rynier (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), Steve Kinnear (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air), Jason Kane (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley), and Josh Michael (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco). Ligitt was second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.1 while he was also the runner-up in the 200 meters with a time of 24.4. Rynier was second in the hammer with a toss of 38.4 meters. Rynier also placed fourth in the discus with a heave of 21.21 meters. Kinnear was second in the pole vault as his best height cleared was 3.85 meters. Kane was the runner-up in the long jump, notching a leap of 5.49 meters while he also placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 12.10 meters. Michael placed second to Mackall in the 800 meters with a time of 2:05.1.

Brandon McLaughlin finished third in the 400 IM hurdles, recording a time of 1:05.5. Hickox came in right behind McLaughlin as he placed fourth with a time of 1:05.6.

Jesse Jaeger (Kingsville, Md./Perry Hall) finished fourth in the 3000 steeplechase and Andrew Friesma (Adamstown, Pa./Cocalico) placed fourth in the 800 meter with a time of 2:06.

The Spartans also received fifth place finishes from Blair Walborn (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg Area) in the javelin and Danny Bosse (Sykesville, Md./Century) in the 1500 meters.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday, March 19 when they host the York College quad at the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center. Goucher, Hood, and Columbia Union will be participating in the Spartans’ first home meet of the year.
