Men's Tennis Suffers Tough Loss in CAC First Round

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – The York College men's tennis team saw their 2014 season come to an end on Saturday as they dropped a 5-4 decision to St. Mary's in the opening round of the 2014 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Seahawks improve to 6-8 overall as they now advance to face top-seeded Mary Washington in the tournament semifinals. The Spartans' season comes to a close with a mark of 6-9.

The Green and White got off to a good start as they won two of the three doubles matches to take an early 2-1 lead. Rory Handlin (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and Zach Hanson (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) combined for an 8-5 second doubles win. Nathaniel Hoskins (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) and Matt Rosenkrantz (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) then outlasted Robert Bishop and Wyatt Paulishake, 9-7, in the third doubles match.

St. Mary's jumped out to a 4-2 lead as they captured the first three singles matches. York tied the match with wins from Kaltrin Bullaj (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) and Hanson. Bullaj won the fifth singles match 6-4, 6-3 and Hanson notched a 6-2, 6-2 win in the sixth singles match.

The match then came down to the fourth singles match. St. Mary's Jay Guzzone won the first set 6-3 but Hoskins rebounded to force a third set with a 7-5 advantage in the second set. Guzzone captured the third set and the team victory with a 7-5 victory.

The Spartans will say farewell to seniors Tyler Cheatham (Wesminster, Md./Wesminster), Tim DeYoung (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown), Mario Herrera (San Francisco, Calif./Josua Christian), Hoskins, and George Sosa (Wilmington, Del./Thomas McKean) as the loss concludes their career.
