Spartan Men Compete at ITA Southeast Regional

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The York College men's tennis team had some strong showings at the three-day ITA Southeast Championship tournament at the University of Mary Washington over the weekend.

The Spartans sent six individuals to the tournament as the York players got great tests during the challenging weekend tournament.

York had one player reach the semifinals of his flight and two others reach their consolation finals.

Freshman Kaltrin Bullaj (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) had a strong showing in his first collegiate tournament as he advanced to the B7 singles semifinals. He began the tournament with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ferrum's D.J. Webster in the round of 16. He advanced to the semifinals after a 7-5, 6-0 win over Goucher's Chad Resnik. Bullaj's run came to an end in the semifinals as Randolph-Macon's Stuart McCrosky posted a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 three set win.

Junior Daniel Erk (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) was very good in the B5 singles draw. After Erk was bounced in the opening round, the Spartan junior came roaring back to win three matches and capture the consolation bracket. Erk defeated Roanoke's Lewis Young 9-7 in his consolation quarterfinals match. He then downed Grove City's Thane Feldeisen 8-0. Erk captured the consolation crown with an 8-3 win over PSU Harrisburg's Alex Kolton.

Matt Rosenkratz (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) also advanced to his consolation finals in the B4 draw. Rosenkrantz began his tournament with a tough three set loss to Muhlenberg's Ben Berkowitz. He rebounded with an 8-1 win over Taylor Napier from Ferrum. Rosenkratz earned his spot on the consolation finals with an 8-0 win over Grove City's Chris Collins. Geoffrey Brennan ended Rosenkratz's run with an 8-2 victory in the finals.

Jake Greenstein (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany Hills) won his opening match in the B6 singles flight but would be eliminated from the draw when the fell to David Dodson from Hampden-Sydney 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

In doubles play, the tandem of Erk and Nathaniel Hoskins (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) was the most successful pairing for the Green and White. The duo dropped their first match in the B2 doubles flight but won their next two matches to advance to the consolation finals. Erk and Hoskins won their consolation quarterfinals 8-6 over Goucher's duo of Midori Fjiltani and Chad Resnik and then downed Ferrum's team of Garrett Freese and Danny Khuorn 8-0. The PSU Harrisburg pair of Alex Kolton and Vincent Lapore stopped Erk and Hoskins in the consolation finals.

The Spartans close out their fall season on Saturday when they travel to Ursinus College to face the Bears in a non-conference match.
