Spartans End Trip with Thursday Sweep
HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The York College men's tennis squad finished their 2013 spring trip to Hilton Head, S.C. with a flourish as they notched a pair of convincing wins on Thursday. The Spartans downed St. Louis College of Pharmacy 8-1 and then concluded the day with a 7-2 win over Alvernia University.
Against St. Louis Pharmacy, The Spartans swept the three doubles matches. Tyler Cheatham (Westminster, Md./Westminster) and Nathaniel Hoskins (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) notched an 8-3 win in the first doubles match up. Matt Rosenkratz (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and Jake Greenstein (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany Hills) also posted an 8-3 win in the second doubles contest. Mario Herrera (San Francisco, Calif./Josua Christian) and George Sosa (Wilmington, Del./Thomas McKean) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win of their own in the third doubles match.
Cheatham, Eric Cooperman (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan), Hoskins, Rosenkrantz, and Daniel Erk (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) each sailed to straight set victories in the first five singles matches to provide for the Spartans' final 8-1 margin of victory.
The Spartans kept the momentum going against the Crusaders from Alvernia. York captured two of the three doubles wins. Rosenkratz and Greenstein picked up their fifth second doubles win of the season with an 8-2 win. Zach Hanson (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) and Rory Handlin (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) posted an 8-3 victory in the third doubles flight for the Green and White.
Cheatham, Rosenkratz, Erk, Herrera, and Tim DeYoung (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) each picked up straight set singles wins for the Spartans.
The Spartans conclude their trip with an overall record of 8-3 as the finished 3-2 on the five-match trip. York returns to action on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Salisbury to face the Sea Gulls in York's 2013 Capital Athletic Conference opener. The match is slated for a 3:30 pm start in Salisbury, Md.
