FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The York College men's tennis team traveled to the USTA ITA Southeast Regional Tournament in Fredericksburg, VA on September 28, 29, and 30th. The tournament features some of the top tennis players from the region in the premiere fall event.
The Spartans sent six players to the tournament and they achieved different levels of success. York's top singles performance came from Nathaniel Hoskins (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) as he won the B6 Singles flight. Hoskins opened the tournament with an 8-6 win over Lawrence Bowers from Hampden-Sydney in the round of 16. He then downed Lycoming's Cody Heffner 8-4 in the quarterfinals. Hoskins earned a hard-fought three set win over Shenandoah's Alex Haley as he won 6-7 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, earning a spot in the finals. He won the flight with a 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 victory over Muhlenberg's Dylan Ander.
York's Jake Greenstein (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany Hills) also had a strong showing in the tournament. He finished second in the B8 Singles draw. Greenstein started the tournament with an 8-3 win over Bridgewater's Drew Hubble. He advanced to the semifinals with his 8-2 quarterfinal win over Grove City's Chris Collins. Greenstein punched his ticket to the finals with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Muhlenberg's Neil Shulman. Juniata's Bryan Gregory knocked off Greenstein in the finals of the draw with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory.
Sophomore Matt Rosenkrantz (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) advanced to the semifinals of the B7 Singles draw. He defeated Ferrum's Mike Marsh 8-2 in the round of 16. He then defeated Muhlenberg's Derrick Eng 8-4 in the quarterfinals. Rosenkrantz was knocked out of the tournament with a tough 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 loss to Lynchburg's Derek Kegerreis.
The Spartan doubles squad of Rosenkrantz and Greenstein combined to advance to the finals of the B4 Doubles flight. The duo defeated Randolph-Macon's Austin Collette and Jody Cox 9-7 in the first round. They then downed the Muhlenberg tandem of Ander and Shulman 9-8 (7-2) to advance to the semifinals. Rosenkrantz and Greenstein earned their way to the finals with an 8-2 victory over Juniata's Gregory and Mike Lifshitz. Hampden-Sydney's Houghton Flanagan and Alex Turkovic ended the Spartans' run with a championship match victory.
The Spartans continue their fall campaign on Friday, October 5 when they travel to Penn State Harrisburg for a non-conference match.
