HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The York College men's tennis team opened up their 2012 spring slate with a tough 5-4 setback to Mercyhurst on Wednesday during the Spartans' winter break trip to Hilton Head, S.C. Including the fall campaign, York drops to 1-3 while the Lakers improve to 1-6.
In doubles play, sophomores Tyler Cheatham and Nathaniel Hoskins posted an 8-3 triumph in the third spot. Philip Myers and James Villari pushed their doubles match into extra play but eventually fell by a 9-7 result.
York did capture a trio of singles matches, securing the third, fourth, and fifth slots. At third singles, Myers bested Mauricio Canton Diaz in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 while Hoskins tallied the victory in fourth singles 6-2, 6-2. Villari's win from the fifth spot also came in just two sets winning 7-6 (2-0), 6-1.
The Spartans are slated to return to action on March 20, as they travel to Penn State-Harrisburg for a 3:30 pm match.
