FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The York College men's tennis squad participated in the 2011 USTA ITA Southeast Regional Championship in Fredericksburg, VA this past weekend. The Spartans had six players participate in the prestigious fall championships.
The Spartans most successful draw came from Matt Rosenkrantz as he won the B6 singles flight. He opened up with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Virginia Wesleyan's Griffin Graves in the round of 16. He followed that with an identical 6-1, 6-1 win over Salisbury's Paul Berryman in the quarterfinals. Rosenkrantz earned his way to the championship match with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Stevenson's Shawn Kelly. Rosenkrantz completed his run with an 8-5 win over St. Mary's Jay Guzzone, capping a perfect 4-0 tournament.
In the B5 singles draw, the Spartans were represented by Tyler Cheatham and James Villari. Cheatham opened his tournament with a 6-4, 6-1 loss in the round of 16. However, he bounced back with a win over Muhlenberg's David Alper. He moved into the consolation championship with an 8-3 win over Hampden-Sydney's Barrett Polan. Cheatham fell to Elizabethtown's Dylan Haefner in the consolation championship with a tight 8-6 loss. Villari dropped both of his matches in the draw, falling to Christpher Newport's Chris Yost 6-1, 7-5 in the round of 16 followed by an 8-5 loss in the consolation quarterfinals.
In the B4 singles, Nate Hoskins split his two matches. Hoskins defeated Sam Churchill 7-6 (8), 6-2 in the round of 16 before faling to F&M's Samuel Stone 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
The Spartans continue their fall season on Tuesday as they travel to Washington, DC to face Catholic University in a non-conference match. The match is slated for a 3:30 pm start.
