Green and White Split Two on Thursday in Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The York College men's tennis team went 1-1 in a pair of matches Thursday, as the Spartans fell to Mercyhurst by a 5-4 result before sweeping Cabrini 9-0 in Hilton Head, S.C. The Green and White now move their 2011 record to 4-1 on the year, including the fall campaign, while Mercyhurst improved to 3-8 and Cabrini dropped to 1-3.

In the match against Mercyhurst, the Spartans found themselves in an early hole as they dropped each of the three doubles matches. Justin Hostetter and Ryan Harvey nearly captured the third doubles slot but Jorn Van der Veer and Eric Drusko just slipped by the duo 9-7.

York did rally in singles however, almost turning the tides completely. Harvey topped Van der Veer in second singles 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 while Colin Jones bested Adam Marnik in another three set match 6-3, 6-7 (0-5), 10-7 in the third slot.

Fourth and sixth singles also went to the Spartans as Philip Myers (6-0, 6-1) and Nathaniel Hoskins (6-4, 6-0) each won in straight sets.

Unfortunately for the Green and White, Mercyhurst was able to snag two singles matches and just edged the Spartans 5-4 to hand York its first team loss of the academic year.

The Spartans bounced back in the second match of the day however, as they cruised to a 9-0 triumph over Cabrini.

Myers and James Villari combined in first doubles to secure an 8-0 triumph while Harvey and Hostetter took second doubles 8-3. Hoskins and Tyler Cheatham put together the third doubles victory with an 8-4 result.

Singles provided similar results as the Green and White only surrendered eight games during the entire singles session. Travis Klein posted a 6-4, 6-0 win at first singles while James Villari took the sixth slot 6-1, 6-1. Harvey and Hoskins won 6-0, 6-0 at second and fifth singles while Myers and Hostetter each secured 6-0, 6-1 triumphs at third and fourth singles, respectively.

With their Hilton Head swing now complete, the Spartans return to action on Saturday, March 12. York is slated to travel to Salisbury, Md. to take on the challenging Sea Gull squad in a 12:00 pm Capital Athletic Conference dual meet.
