ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The York College men's tennis squad began its 2010 fall campaign with a quality first showing of the year at the Muhlenberg Fall Classic. The Green and White captured five of the tournament's nine divisions.
In the first singles match, Spartan newcomer Gavin Smith defeated Stefan Apostolos of Moravian, 6-3, 6-3 in a straight sets. In the championship Smith picked up the victory by default.
In third singles, Ryan Harvey defeated Dakkota Deem of Wilkes, 6-0, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6). Unfortunately for the Spartans, Harvey was defeated in the championship by Nick Yelito of Moravian, 8-3.
Colin Jones defeated Stefan Toulouse of Moravian in the fourth singles match 6-1, 6-4. In the championship, Jones defeated Clarke Freeman. In the consolation, James Villari defeated Brian Mintz of Muhlenberg, 8-5.
Fifth singles saw Philip Myers defeat Jason Richman of Muhlenberg, 6-1, 6-2. In the championship Myers registered a 9-7 triumph over Wilkes' Alex Makos.
In sixth singles, Justin Hostetter beat Robert Buesser of Muhlenberg, 6-2, 6-1 before taking the championship 9-8 (8-6) over Jon Rohrbach of Wilkes.
In doubles play, Jones and Travis Klein defeated the tandem Wayne Mitchel and Jason Teitelbaum of Muhlenberg, 8-2. In the championship, the Spartan pair suffered an 8-3 loss at the hands of Wilkes' Evan Katz and Clarke Freeman.
In second doubles, Smith and Hostetter bested the combination of Deem and Makos by an 8-2 count. In the championship, Smith and Hostetter defeated the team of Drew Shreter and Nick Yelito of Moravian, 8-5
In the third and final doubles match, Harvey and Myers defeated Stefan Toulouse and Craig Bunting of Moravian, 8-1. In the championship, Harvey and Myers ousted Wes McCollum and Jason Rohrbach, 8-5
The Green and White return to action on Wednesday, September 29, as they host Goucher in a 3:30 pm match.
