Men's Tennis Picks Up First CAC Win of the Year
FREDERICK, MD – The York College men’s tennis team rolled past Hood College 8-1 in Capital Athletic Conference action on Thursday afternoon in Frederick, Md. The Spartans improve to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in the CAC while the Blazers fall to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The Spartans won two of three doubles matches to start the day. The Blazers captured the first doubles match but the Spartans responded by winning the second and third doubles matches. Ryan Harvey (Fallston, Md./Fallston), the reigning CAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, combined with Justin Hostetter (Lincoln University, Pa./Oxford Area) to post an 8-0 second doubles win. Philip Myers () and James Villari (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) posted an 8-1 win in the third doubles match, giving York the early 2-1 lead.
In singles play, senior Paul Graci (Exton, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) battled Mike Hardman for a three set victory in the first singles match. Graci won the first set but dropped the second set 6-2. He won the match with a 6-3, third set victory.
The Spartans captured the remaining singles matches in straight sets. Steve Collison (Westville, N.J./Woodbury) won at second singles followed by Colin Jones (Felton, Pa./Red Lion) in third singles, Hostetter posted a fourth singles win while Harvey notched a 6-0, 6-0 win at fifth singles. Myers closed out singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 win at sixth singles.
The Spartans return to action on Sunday with a trip to Catholic University. The match is slated to begin at 3:15 pm.
