YORK, PA – The York College men’s tennis team dropped their 2009 home opener as they fell to the University of Mary Washington, 5-4, in a Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon in York. The Spartans fall to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the CAC while the Eagles improve to 7-7 overall and 2-0 in the CAC.
The Eagles began the day by winning two of the three doubles matches. York’s lone victory came in the third singles as Paul Graci (Exton, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) and Steve Collison (Westville, N.J./Woodbury) combined to post an 8-6 win. York had a chance to win the first doubles match up but the Eagles’ Bryce Parrish and Eric Sundstrom pulled out an 8-6 victory in the match against Tim Mowrer (Gordonville, Pa./Pequea Valley) and Colin Jones (Felton, Pa./Red Lion).
In singles play, Mowrer got the Spartans off to a good start with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Parrish in the first singles match. The Eagles captured the second and third singles contests but Collison earned a three-set win in the fourth singles match.
Mary Washington won the fifth singles match to secure the win but Travis Klein (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) made it close with a 6-4, 6-0 win in the sixth singles match.
York returns to action on Sunday morning when they face Washington College of Maryland. The Spartans and Shoremen face off against 9:00 am at the Spartan Tennis Center.
