YORK, PA – The York College men’s
tennis team picked up their sixth straight win Saturday afternoon
with a 9-0 sweep of St. Mary’s in the opening round of the
2009 Capital Athletic Conference tournament. The victory improves
the Spartans’ season mark to 10-7 while St. Mary’s fall
to 11-10.
Beginning with doubles action,
Tim Mowrer (Gordonville, Pa./Pequea Valley) and
Joel Trimmer (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) bested St.
Mary’s top doubles tandem by an 8-2 count.
The second doubles slot belonged to
Jeff Mansfield (Bartonsville, Pa./North Harford)
and Colin Jones (Felton, Pa./Red Lion) as they
pair recorded an 8-3 triumph. The third duo of Paul Graci
(Exton, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) and Steve Collison
(Westville, N.J./Woodbury) registered an 8-4 victory of
their own to secure all three doubles points for the Spartans.
As with doubles, the Green and
White swept through each of the singles matches, taking all six
points in straight sets.
Mowrer, who now stands at 13-4 in
2009, won 6-2, 6-3 in his first singles match while Graci grabbed a
6-2, 6-4 victory at #2.
Trimmer and Collison notched
comfortable triumphs at third and fourth singles, respectively.
Trimmer found his tenth with of 2009 via a 6-1, 6-0 result.
Collison improved his junior season record to 12-5 by way of a 6-0,
6-1 victory.
Mansfield took the fifth singles point
for the Green and White with a 6-2, 6-1 win while freshman
Ryan Harvey (Fallston, Md./Fallston) picked up his
second career victory with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in sixth singles.
The Spartans will now travel to
Salisbury for the semifinal round of the league tournament. York
will look to avenge a 9-0 loss earlier in the year and advance to
