Spartans Split Two in Hilton Head
HILTON HEAD, SC – The York College
men’s tennis squad split a pair of contests Wednesday in two
matches at Hilton Head, S.C. The Spartans fell 9-0 to Division II
Kutztown before topping Grand Rapids Community College 8-1 in the
nightcap. The two results leave the Green and White with a 2-2
overall record while the Golden Bears improves to 1-1 and Grand
Rapids drops to 3-5.
Spartan #1 Tim Mowrer
(Gordonville, Pa./Pequea Valley) put in a valiant effort
in his match with Kutztown’s Santiago Bauerizo. Mowrer bested
Bauerizo in the first set by a 6-3 count but the Golden
Bears’ #1 rallied in the latter two sets to take the match
3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Paul Graci (Exton, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) and
Travis Klein (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain
East) nearly topped their respective opponents in the #2
and #6 slots. Despite falling in straight sets 7-5, 6-4, Graci kept
the match competitive as the experience should bode well for the
junior later in the year. Just as with Mowrer, Klein nabbed the
first set of his singles match by a 7-6 (7-4) count. Unfortunately
the final result was the same as Mowrer’s as Arjit Goswami
took the second and third sets from Klein, 6-2, 10-2.
In doubles, Graci and Steve
Collison (Westville, N.J./Woodbury) battled the in the #3
slot but fell just short, 8-6.
The Spartans faired much better against Grand Rapids, taking the
match 8-1. Mowrer quickly improved his season mark to 3-1 with a
straight set, 6-3, 6-1, victory over Jeff Karasinski, while Graci
took his #2 singles match 6-0, 6-4.
Joel Trimmer (Hanover,
Pa./Hanover) secured the win at third singles with a
hard-fought 6-0, 2-6, 10-2 victory. Collison, Jeff
Mansfield (Bartonsville, Pa./North Harford), and Klein
completed the singles sweep with straight set triumphs in the
fourth through sixth positions.
Mowrer and Colin Jones
(Felton, Pa./Red Lion) teamed up in doubles action to take
the top spot by an 8-5 score line, while Trimmer and Mansfield
secured the second slot, 8-6.
York remains in Hilton Head for one more
match as they face Mercyhurst College on Thursday, March 5. The
non-conference action in begins at 6:00 pm.
