Green and White Sweep Gophers in Towson
TOWSON, MD – The York College men’s
tennis team picked up their sixth win of the season on Thursday
with a 9-0 sweep of Goucher. The triumph pushes the Spartans’
2009 record to 6-7 while the Gophers drop to 1-6.
Tim Mowrer (Gordonville, Pa./Pequea
Valley) secured the #1 singles slot for the Green and
White with a comfortable 6-0, 6-1 victory. York’s top singles
player improved his season mark to a solid 9-4.
Paul Graci (Exton, Pa./Bishop
Shanahan) followed up Mowrer’s win with one of his
own in the #2 slot. The junior also won comfortably by a 6-0, 6-3
margin.
Joel Trimmer (Hanover,
Pa./Hanover) returned to his familiar #3 position against
the Gophers and picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
In the fourth singles match, reigning Capital
Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week
Steve Collison (Woodville, N.J./Westville)
captured a 6-3, 6-2 triumph. The junior’s mark now stands at
8-5 for 2009.
Jeff Mansfield (Bartonsville, Pa./North
Harford) battled Bille Weiss in the fifth singles match
and secured the come back victory. After being down after the first
set, 6-7 (3-7), Mansfield knotted the match at one in the second
with a 6-1 win. Mansfield then won an abbreviated third set 1-0
(10-6) to take the fifth singles’ point.
Travis Klein (East Stroudsburg,
Pa./Pocono Mountain East), who has played exceptionally
well as the Spartans’ sixth player, won yet again with a
clean 6-0, 6-0 win. The triumph ups the sophomore’s 2009 mark
to 9-3.
In doubles, Mowrer teamed up with Colin
Jones (Felton, Pa./Red Lion) to take the #1 slot win 8-3.
The second spot belonged to Graci and Collison who combined to win
8-0. Trimmer and Klein picked up the third doubles victory with an
8-2 result.
York returns to the court on Monday, April 6,
with a home match against McDaniel at 3:00 pm. That match against
the Green Terror begins at three-day, three-match home stand where
the Green and White will also take on CAC foes Hood and Wesley.
