Spartans Capture First Win with 9-0 Result
HILTON HEAD, SC – The York College
men’s tennis team put in a dominating performance Tuesday
afternoon with a convincing 9-0 victory over Catholic in Hilton
Head, S.C. The result pushes the Spartans into the win column for
the first time this year as the Green and White improve to 1-1. The
Cardinals fall to an even 2-2.
Tim Mowrer (Gordonville, Pa./Pequea
Valley), York’s #1 singles player, ups his early
senior campaign mark to a flawless 2-0. The 2008 All-Capital
Athletic Conference performer topped Jean Paul Brown in straight
sets 6-4, 6-1.
Junior Paul Graci (Exton, Pa./Bishop
Shanahan) backed up Mowrer’s win with a straight set
victory of his own in the #2 slot. Graci did not surrender a game
as he posted a strong 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Joel Trimmer (Hanover,
Pa./Hanover) and Steve Collison (Westville,
N.J./Woodbury) recorded hard-fought triumphs in the #3 and
#4 spots respectively. Although winning in straight sets once
again, Trimmer needed a 7-5 tie-breaker to officially sweep the
match 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). Collison battled back from one set down to
provide the Green and White with yet another victory. Falling
behind to Luigi Alvarado in the first set, 7-6 (7-5), Collison
rallied in the second to take the set 6-0. The junior then finished
off the match in the third by a 10-4 score line.
York’s Jeff Mansfield
(Bartonsville, Pa./North Harford) secured the #5 singles
match with a comfortable 6-1, 6-3 win while Travis Klein
(East Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) nabbed the
win in the #6 slot, 6-1, 6-0.
Doubles proved to be more of the same for
the Spartans as the Green and White swept through all three
matches. Mowrer and Colin Jones (Felton, Pa./Red
Lion) led off with a victory at #1 doubles with an 8-2
result over Roman and Matthew Netardus. Trimmer and Mansfield
combined at #2 as they captured a tight 8-6 victory, while Graci
and Collison posted another York win in the third doubles slot
courtesy of an 8-2 result.
The Spartans complete their trip to Hilton
Head with a split double-header on Wednesday. York squares off with
Kutztown at 10:00 am before taking on Grand Rapids Community
College at 6:30 pm.
