Spartans Cruise to Fifth Straight Win
ST. MARY’S CITY, MD – The York
College men’s tennis team captured their ninth victory of the
season on Thursday with a 9-0 Capital Athletic Conference win over
host St. Mary’s. The triumph improves the Spartans’
2009 mark to 9-7 (4-2 CAC) while the Seahawks fall to 11-8 (1-4
CAC).
Beginning with doubles action, seniors
Tim Mowrer (Gordonville, Pa./Pequea Valley) and
Joel Trimmer (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) posted an 8-2
victory in the first slot. The pair recorded the victory in their
first outing as a team.
Jeff Mansfield (Bartonsville, Pa./North
Harford) and Colin Jones (Felton, Pa./Red
Lion) secured the second doubles match for the Spartans by
an 8-3 margin. Paul Graci (Exton, Pa./Bishop
Shanahan) and Steve Collison (Westville,
N.J./Woodbury) completed the doubles sweep with a
comfortable 8-1 victory in the third slot.
York’s winning streak spilled over into
the singles matches as York took all six points.
Mowrer (6-1, 6-0) grabbed the first position
match to up his season mark to a strong 12-4. Graci followed suit
with a 6-1, 7-5 victory in second singles while Trimmer notched the
third slot victory by identical 6-1, 6-1 sets.
Collison posted his eleventh victory of the
season (6-1, 6-4) as he now stands at 11-5 for his junior campaign.
Mansfield’s 6-4, 6-3 result secured the fifth singles spot
for the Green and White while Travis Klein (East
Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) completed the
Spartan sweep. Klein’s 6-1, 6-2 straight set victory bumped
his season record to a strong 12-3.
The victory over St. Mary’s concludes the
Spartans’ 2009 regular season slate. York will now embark on
the CAC tournament, which is slated to begin this Saturday, April
