YORK, PA- The York College men’s tennis team posted opened their stay in the 2008 Capital Athletic Conference men’s tennis tournament with a 9-0 victory over Wesley College in the tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday. The Spartans, who are the three seed in the tournament, improve to 15-4 overall. The Wolverines, who are the five seed, fall to 2-7 for the season.
The Spartans dropped just one game in the three doubles matches. In the first doubles, Ron Ho (Frederick, Md./Frederick) and Jeff Mansfield (Bartonsville, Pa./North Harford) posted an 8-0 win. In the second doubles match, the duo of Tim Mowrer (Gordonville, Pa./Pequea Valley) and Joel Trimmer (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) also recorded an 8-0 shutout in their match. The third doubles team of Josh Kulp (Souderton, Pa./Homeschooled) and Braxton Koppelman (Alexandria, Va./Annandale) rolled to an 8-1 win in their match with Rashad Laster and Luke Melillo.
Mowrer opened the singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win in first singles. Sophomore Paul Graci (Exton, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) recorded a 6-2, 6-0 win in the second singles match while Trimmer dropped just one game in the third singles match as he defeated Andrew Smyth 6-1, 6-0. Ho at fourth singles, Kulp at fifth singles, and Mansfield closed out the match with straight set wins. Ho won 6-2, 6-0 while Kulp notched a 6-2, 6-1 win in his match. Mansfield defeated Will Sutton 6-1, 6-1.
The Spartans now advance to face second-seeded Mary Washington in the CAC semifinals on Thursday afternoon. The match in Fredericksburg is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
