Stellar Spartan Season Comes to a Close with Tournament Loss at UMW

FREDERICKSBURG, VA- The York College men’s tennis team saw their outstanding 2008 campaign come to an end as the green and white fell to #11 Mary Washington 8-1 in the Capital Athletic???Conference semifinals in Fredericksburg, VA???on Thursday. The Eagles advance to the CAC???championship games they improve to 19-6. The Spartans end the season with a mark of 15-5.

The Eagles won all three doubles matches. The closest doubles match came in the second as Tim Mowrer (Gordonville, Pa./Pequea Valley) and Joel Trimmer (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) lost 8-4.

In singles action, the Eagles posted straight set wins in the first, second, third, fifth, and sixth singles flights. The Spartans’ lone win came from senior Ron Ho (Frederick, Md./Frederick) as recorded a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 win in the fourth singles match. Ho also won York’s lone point in their regular season loss to the Eagles on March 25.

The Spartans will lose three seniors for the 2009 campaign as Ho, Braxton Koppleman (Alexandria,???Va./Annandale), and Shawn Holzmann (Red???Hook, N.Y./Red???Hook) have played their final match for the green and white. York is slated to return five of their six singles starters for next year while four of their six main doubles players are slated to return as the Spartans look to continue to build their program. York has notched 25 wins in the last two seasons.
