YORK Pa. – The Spartan men's swimming team (6-3-1) swam a tough meet against Rowan University (8-0) on Wednesday, but fell short. The Spartans had record performances but were unable to overcome the Rowan depth and fell 154-101.
York Natatorium shook with two pool records being broken. Kyle Walthall (Port Hueneme, Ca. / Rio Mesa) tore up the water in his 200-breast performance. Russell Stoll (Pompton Lakes, N.J. / Pompton Lakes) tore up the waters with his own performance in the 200 back. Walthall broke the record in the 200 breast with a time of 2:07.64 that topped the second place finisher by 12 seconds. Stoll broke the record in the 200 back, with a time of 1:58.89 that topped the second place finisher by over 12 seconds.
Walthall finished the 100 breast with a winning time of 58.71, while Stoll took a second in the 100 back 54.86. David Altobelli (Silver Spring, Md. / James Hubert Blake) swam a tough grouping the 1,000 free and was able to nab a second place finish in 10:36.39. Altobelli also swam tough in the 500 free with a third place finishing time of 5:12.13
In the 100 free, Matt Terrell (Pottstown, Pa. / Owen J. Roberts) took third with a close swim of 50.22, while Shane Bonner (Ridley Park, Pa. / Ridley) nabbed a third in the 50 free with a 22.75. Nick Lucash (Coatesville, Pa. / Coatesville) was able to take a second in the 100 fly with a time of 59.16, while Adam Schin (Lewisberry, Pa. / Cedar Cliff) finished behind his fellow Spartan with a time of 1:00.14.
The Spartans return to action on Friday, January 17 at home against Penn State Altoona and Gallaudet at 6 pm.
