Spartans Dunk Saints in CAC Contest
YORK, Pa. – The York College men's swim team defeated conference rival Marymount Saturday afternoon by a score of 125-82.
The men kicked of the afternoon with a pair of top three finishes in the 200 yard medley relay. The top team for the Green and White was Cody Latchford (New Castle, Del. / William Penn), Donald Timmerman (Randolph, N.J. / Randolph), Nick Lucash (Coatesville, Pa. / Coatesville), and Bryant Hughes (Middletown, Del. / Carvel Academy) who combined for a second place, 1:44.81 finish. Martin Schmidt (Pilesgrove, N.J. / Woodstown), Cameron Byrne (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East), Matthew Corkwell (Piscataway, N.J. / Piscataway), and Adam Schin (Lewisberry, Pa. / Cedar Cliff) would finish in third position with a time of 1:50.62.
In the 1000 yard freestyle, the men would match the trifecta finish posted by the women. The trio was led by freshman Russell Stoll (Pompton Lakes, N.J. / Pompton Lakes) who completed the event in 10:43.01. He would be supported by Kyle Walthall (Port Hueneme, Ca. / Rio Mesa) in second place, with a 10:50.96, and Matt Terrell (Pottstown, Pa. / Owen J. Roberts) in third with a time of 10:57.00.
The success would continue as Latchford and David Altobelli (Silver Spring, Md. / James Hubert Blake) would swim to top three finishes in the 200 yard freestyle. Latchford's 1:52.17 would pace the field with a 1:52.17 finish, as Altobelli would finish two seconds later, in third, with a 1:54.17.
Hughes and Lucash would pair up in the 50 yard freestyle. The two sprinted to a 1-2 finish with Hughes' 22.48 leading the way, as Lucash touched at 23.36.
Freshman Tim DeCoursey (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill West) got in the scoring action in the 100 yard freestyle by placing first with a time of 52.14. Byrne, a freshman himself, took third place when he touched the wall at 53.25.
Altobelli added more points for the Green and White in the 100 yard backstroke. His 1:00.10 bested teammate Martin Schmidt by just one second. Schmidt finished in 1:01.10.
Junior standouts Hughes and Latchford showed why they are two of the Spartans' top swimmers in the 500 yard freestyle. Finishing just over a second apart, the pair nabbed the top two spots. Hughes led the way with a 5:16.48, as Latchford finished at 5:17.62.
Walthall took first place in the 100 yard breaststroke, an event that has proved to be his strong suit. Walthall touched the wall today in 1:00.58. Timmerman supported Walthall's performance with a second place finish posting a 1:04.03.
The Green and White now stand at 3-1 on the season. They return to action on Saturday November 9 when they host Salisbury, Dickinson, and St. Vincent in a tri-meet. Meet time is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
