Spartans Strong Start Leads to 1-0 Start
Spartan veteran standouts Bryant Hughes (Middletown, Del. / Caravel Academy), Kyle Walthall (Port Hueneme, Ca. / Rio Mesa), Cody Latchford (New Castle, Del. / William Penn), and Shane Bonner (Ridley Park, Pa. / Ridley) kicked off the meet by combining for a first place finish in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:40.48. The all-freshmen team of Russell Stoll (Pompton Lakes, N.J. / Pompton Lakes), Cameron Byrne (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East), Matt Terrell (Pottstown, Pa. / Owen J. Roberts), and Nick Lucash (Coatesville, Pa. / Coatesville) showed off their talent by finishing a close second with a time of 1:41.95.
Freshman distance swimmer Wynne Kirchner (Elkridge, Md. / Howard) welcomed himself to the lineup in winning fashion. His 11:15.68 paced the field in the 1000 yard freestyle. Sophomore David Altobelli (Silver Spring, Md. / James Hubert Blake) complimented Kirchner's performance with a second place finish of 11:26.31.
Terrell's first individual action came in the 200 yard freestyle event. He bested Bonner's second place 1:56.16 by touching the wall in 1:52.22.
The Green and White saw first place finishes in the 50 yard backstroke and 50 yard breaststroke events. Sophomore Martin Schmidt (Pilesgrove, N.J. / Woodstown) topped the field in the 50 yard backstroke with a time of 29.07. Walthall, the reigning CAC Rookie of the Year, took the 50 yard breaststroke with a 27.71.
The Spartans earned a 1-2 finish in the 100 yard butterfly as Latchford teamed with Stoll to post respective times of 55.76 and 58.71.
Hughes sprinted to a 22.37 in the 50 yard freestyle, posting first place points on the Green and White side of the scoreboard.
The 100 yard freestyle saw an all-freshmen top three for York. Lucash, Terrell, and Stoll completed the trifecta with times of 50.59, 51.28, and 51,96 respectively.
Hughes continued his strong meet by taking first place in the 100 yard backstroke race after touching the wall in 59.21.
Freshman Tim McCullough (Rose Valley, Pa. / Strath Haven) got his first taste of collegiate success after placing second in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.35.
Following the strong start, Coach Erin Kurtz elected to compete in the final four events in exhibition form. Those events included the 500 yard freestyle, 50 yard butterfly, and 200 yard individual medley. Walthall posted a 5:10.27, while freshman Tim DeCoursey (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill West) recorded a 5:23.44 in the 500 yard freestyle. Latchford and Bonner finished the 50 yard butterfly with 24.69 and 24.96 times, respectively. Stoll completed the four-stroke individual medley in 2:08.47.
The 1-0 Spartans look to continue their strong start as they take on Elizabethtown on Saturday October 26 in the York College Natatorium. Meet time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
