ST. MARY'S CITY – The York College Men's swim team kicked off the Capital Athletic Conference Championships Friday at St. Mary's College. The morning session consisted of the preliminaries for the 500 freestyle yard, 200 yard IM, and 50 yard freestyle events.
The first event of the day was the 500 yard freestyle. This event saw three Spartans qualify for consolations as freshman Kyle Walthall (Port Huereme, Ca/ Rio Mesa) place tenth with a time of 4:59.13. Nine seconds later, Bryant Hughes (Middletown, Del/ Caravel Academy) touched the wall in 5:08.10, good for 14th and a spot in the night cap's consolation heat. Adam Schin also earned a consolation berth in 16th with a time of 5:15.09.
The lone Green and White representative in the 200 yard IM, Matthew Corkwell (Piscataway, N.J./ Piscataway), qualified for the finals with a time of 2:12.91.
The final event of the morning session was the 50 yard freestyle. Sophomore Shane Bonner (Ridley Park, Pa/ Ridley) qualified for the finals with a fourth place, 21.63, in the preliminary contest. Fellow Spartan, Tyler Ziegler (Coastesville, Pa./ Coatesville), qualified for consolation berth with a 10th place finish of 22.64.
The Green and White returned to The Aquatics Center at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center for the night session looking to follow up the morning session's success. The evening was kicked off with the 200 yard freestyle relay. Bonner, Hughes, Ziegler, and Cody Latchford (New Castle, Del/ William Penn) teamed up a season best time of 1:27.07, garnering a second place finish.
Walthall matched his tenth place qualification placement as he finished tenth in the heat, while knocking off just over a second on his previous time, with a 4:57.72. Hughes finished with a time of 5:11.51, as Schin finished out the contest with a time of 5:15.80.
Moving to the 200 yard IM, Corkwell dropped almost two seconds of time as he completed all four strokes in a time of 2:11.05.
Bonner's strong 50 yard freestyle day continued as he sprinted to a final time of 21.70 en route to a fourth place finish. In the consolation heat, Zielger sprinted to an 11th place finish with a 22.64.
The night concluded with another relay, as Latchford, Walthall, senior Andy Woods (Dover, Pa/ Dover Area), and Bonner competed in the 400 yard medley relay. The team combined for a near school record breaking time of 3:34.84, good for third place.
As a team, the Spartans currently sit in fourth place with 100 points. The Green and White return to the water at 10:00am Saturday for Day 2's preliminaries. The events scheduled are the 400 yard IM, 100 yard butterfly, 200 yard freestyle, 100 yard breaststroke, and 100 yard backstroke. The 200 yard medley relay and 800 yard medley relay will take place in the night session.
