Spartans Close Out First Semester in Triumphant Fashion
YORK, Pa. – In their second meet in as many days, the York College men's swimming team posted a convincing 205-47 result over visiting Elizabethtown Saturday afternoon in York. The triumph proves the Spartans' 10th of the season as they improve to 10-2 on the season.
Sweeping each of the meet's 14 events, the Green and White opened the men's portion with a first-place triumph in the 200 medley relay. Cody Latchford, Tyler Ziegler, Richard Janosky, and Alex Diehl got the Spartans rolling with a 1:43.16 time.
And York certainly did roll from there taking first in each of the 12 individual events as three Spartans recorded multiple individual wins. Jack Gottschalk took both the distance freestyle events, recording a 10:37.09 in the 1,000 before notching a victorious 5:08.25 in the 500.
Fellow senior Jamie Hicks notched his duo in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. He touched the wall at 1:04.57 in the 100 while stopping the timer a 2:23.22 in the 200.
Andy Woods put together his two wins in the backstroke. Woods' first triumph came in the 100 backstroke as he finished in 57.13. Later in the meet, the junior swam to a victorious 2:09.62 in the 200 event.
Diehl, who swam the anchor leg in both of York's winning relays, posted a first-place time in the 100 freestyle with a 50.06. Freshman Shane Bonner grabbed first in the 50 freestyle with a 22.51 while fellow newcomer Adam Schin notched first in the 200 butterfly with a 2:14.12.
York's 400 IM record-holder, Steven Mercer, notched a win in his signature event with a 4:41.79. James Kovach, another talented Spartan rookie, posted a triumphant 58.24 in the 100 butterfly. Bryant Hughes collected his individual win as he swam to a 1:54.66 in the 200 freestyle.
In the final event of the afternoon, Bonner, Janosky, Latchford, and Diehl teamed up for a 1:29.93 in the 200 freestyle relay to snag first-place points.
Latchford recorded a pair of runner-up finishes for the Green and White as he took second in the 1,000 freestyle (10:55.23) and the 100 backstroke (58.24). Jeffrey Buratti (200 breaststroke) and Matthew Corkwell (100 butterfly) each recorded a top-three time for the York squad.
With their final meet of the first semester now complete, the Spartans will soon turn their attention to the grueling winter training period. York's next meet is slated for Saturday, January 14, at 1:00 pm as they travel to Collegeville, Pa. to take on Ursinus.
