FROSTBURG, Md. – The York College men's swimming team closed out their 2010-2011 regular season in commanding fashion Saturday afternoon as they bested host Frostburg St. 145-90 in a Capital Athletic Conference tilt. The Spartans, who finish the year with an 8-5 (5-1 CAC) record, posted the top time in each of the meet's 14 events.
In Frostburg's meter pool, Jack Gottschalk, Andy Woods, and Benjamin Hilt each registered meet-best times in two events. Gottschalk won the 800-meter freestyle with a 9:35.91 and later posted a 4:39.88 in the 400-meter free. Woods captured the 100-meter backstroke victory with a 1:06.38 while he registered a 1:04.20 in the 100-meter butterfly. Hilt's double came in back-to-back races as he won the 50-meter freestyle with a 25.25 and then turned around in the next event – the 100-meter free – and clocked a winning 58.66.
Tyler Ziegler registered a first-place time in the 200-meter freestyle with a 2:08.63 while Steve Yeager won the 100-meter breaststroke with a 1:14.69.
Continuing the triumphant trend, AJ Bean secured the 200-meter butterfly, which incidentally was the only individual event in which the Green and White did not snag the top-two times. Bean's 2:31.13 gave the Spartans the nine first-place points.
Fellow senior captain Chris Schleicher recorded a 2:27.89 to take the 200-meter backstroke before Jamie Hicks captured the 200-meter breaststroke with a 2:38.24.
In the 200-meter IM, Steven Mercer registered the event's best time of the day with a 2:26.88.
The Spartans also recorded top meet times in both the 200-meter medley and 200-meter freestyle relays. In the medley, Schleicher, Hicks, Richard Janosky, and Gottschalk combined for a 1:59.06. To end the meet, Janosky, Alex Diehl, Ziegler, and Mercer teamed up to post a 1:43.95.
Individually, the York squad also secured 11 second-place finishes. Matt Kempel collected two runner-up times (800-meter free, 200-meter IM) while Thomas DeCoursey posted second in the 50-meter freestyle.
With the regular season now officially complete, the Spartans will turn their focus February's CAC Championships. Hosted by St. Mary's College of Maryland, the three-day meet opens up on Friday, February 18.
