Ursinus Dampens York Senior Day Celebration
YORK, Pa. – Following over a month off from competition, the York College men's swimming team returned to competitive action Saturday as they fell to Ursinus 142-120 at the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center. With the loss, the Spartans drop to 7-5 on the season.
York opened up the men's side of the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay. Bean, Tobin, Andy Woods, and Hilt combined for the triumph as they posted a 1:39.97.
Individually, the Green and White registered three wins, two of which came from Jamie Hicks. Hicks posted a 1:03.96 to take the 100 breaststroke while he also snagged the win in the 200 breast with a 2:20.57.
Sophomore Steven Mercer posted an exciting victory in the 200 IM. Mercer and Ursinus' Chris Smith were together right to the end but Mercer out-touched Smith at the end besting him by a mere .05 as he recorded a 2:06.08 to Smith's 2:06.13.
Bean had a quality meet as he posted two seconds and third. Bean took the runner-up spot in both the 100 and 200 backstroke (58.73 and 2:02.05) while his third came in the 500 freestyle (5:11.65).
Tobin and Woods also took second-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly respectively. Tobin touched the wall at 1:04.06 while Woods came in at 55.52. Hilt finished second in the 50 free with a 22.56 while DeCoursey timed a 51.13 in the 100 free.
Gottschalk secured a pair of thirds for the Green and White as he swam the 1,000 free (11:00.02) and the 200 IM (2:11.65).
Alex Diehl took third in the 200 free with a 1:52.55 while senior Kempel posted a 2:13.70 in the 200 butterfly. Fellow seniors Schleicher and Yeager also registered third-place times. Schleicher came in at 2:11.36 in the 200 backstroke while Yeager clocked a 2:24.87.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, January 22, when they travel to new Capital Athletic Conference foe Frostburg. Meet time in western Maryland is slated for 1:00 pm.
