YORK, Pa. – The York College men's swimming squad returned to the pool on Friday night to host Penn State-Altoona, and Gallaudet University. The Spartans picked up a pair of wins, posting scores of 167-34 over PSU Altoona and 156-49 over former Capital Athletic Conference foe Gallaudet. During the meet the Spartans picked up nine first place finishes throughout the night.
Starting off the meet, the Spartans did not leave anything to chance coming in the top two spots in 200 Medley Relay posting times of the 1:43.23, and 1:45.23.
Continuing on their streak of top-three finishes, junior Jack Gottschalk touched the wall at 11:00.86 to give him a first place finish in the 1000 freestyle. Following him were fellow Spartans Matt Kempel, with a time of 11:15.48, and freshman Peter Zientara, who touched in at 12:28.66.
As the Green and White continue to dominate the field, senior Benjamin Hilt hit the wall at 22.41 giving him a first place finish in the 50 freestyle. Junior Alex Diehl followed Hilt by posting a time of 22.89.
Splashing his way to a first-place finish, sophomore Steven Mercer completed the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:08.04. That mark gave Mercer the top spot as he just bested fellow Spartan sophomore Andy Woods who touched the wall two seconds after Mercer, posting a time of 2:10.14.
Hilt totaled his second victory of the day as hit the wall with a time of 55.04 in the 100 butterfly.
Another 1-2-3 combo happened for the Green and White as Diehl, Steve Yeager, and Gottschalk each posted the top three times in the 100 freestyle. Clinching the number one spot was Diehl with a time of 50.48.
Adding to one of the Spartans' nine first place finishes was Woods, who touched the wall at 57.66 in the 100 breaststroke.
Giving the Spartans another 1-2-3 combo in the pool were junior Jamie Hicks, sophomore Tyler Ziegler (who swam as an exhibition), and senior Steven Tobin in the 100 breaststroke. Hicks touched the wall at 1:03.45 to give him the first place finish over his fellow Spartans.
Finishing out the night with the 200 yard freestyle relay the Spartan crew posted a time that was unbeatable as the were on top at 1:32.90. Members of the winning crew were Ziegler, Steven Mercer, Diehl, and anchoring it for the Spartans was senior Tom DeCoursey.
The Green and White return to the pool on Saturday, December 4, to face off against Salisbury University and Goucher College for a slated start time of 1:00 pm.
