Spartans Split Home Opener; Drop First Non-Conference Tilt Since 2002

YORK, Pa. – The York College men's swimming squad opened up their 2010-2011 home slate on Saturday, garnering a split with Capital Athletic Conference foe Marymount and schedule-newcomer Washington & Jefferson. The Spartans bested Marymount 93-29 but fell to W&J by an ever-so-slight 63-59 margin.

York's loss to Washington & Jefferson serves as the Green and White's first non-conference loss since the 2002-2003 season. The Spartans' last dropped an out-of-conference meet to Dickinson back on December 4, 2002, falling 141-64. Since that time, York had registered 30 straight victories against non-conference opponents.

Despite the disappointing loss, the Spartans did post several quality results in the down-to-the-wire meet.

Overall, the Green and White notched eight victories throughout the tri-meet, including seven individual triumphs.

York kicked-off the day in outstanding fashion, winning the meet-opening 200 medley relay. Andy Woods, Steven Tobin, Benjamin Hilt, and Jack Gottschalk combined for a victorious 1:40.52.

Each of those four would go on to tally individual wins. Woods snagged the triumph in the 100 butterfly (55.31) while Tobin secured his victory in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.52).

In the 50 free, Hilt took first with a 22.12 while Gottschalk clocked a winning time of 5:06.67 in the 500 freestyle.

AJ Bean picked up his second 200 backstroke win of the year, as he took first in his signature event. The senior clocked in at 2:03.06. Fellow senior Steve Yeager snagged a victory in the 200 breaststroke as he swam to a 2:22.16.

York's eighth and final win of the day came from sophomore Steven Mercer. The second-year Spartan notched his first-place finish in the 200 IM with a 2:06.58.

In addition to their eight firsts, York also collected three second-place times and eight thirds.

Bean took second in the 100 backstroke with a 56.09 while Tyler Ziegler recorded the runner-up spot in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.99).

In the meet's final race, the 400 freestyle relay, the group of Alex Diehl, Thomas DeCoursey, Woods, and Bean combined for a 3:21.77, a mere .34 behind W&J's winning time.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday, November 13, when they host CAC foe St. Mary's (Md.), Dickinson, and Susquehanna. The quad meet is slated for 1:00 pm from York's Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center.
