Spartans Open Slate at UMW Tri-Meet

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The York College men's swimming team opened up their 2010-2011 regular slate on Friday evening with a trip to Mary Washington for a tri-meet with a pair of Capital Athletic Conference foes. York faced the perennially strong Eagles as well as fellow Hood in their first event of the campaign.

The Spartans picked up one outright individual victory on the day as senior AJ Bean snagged the 200 backstroke. Bean pierced through the water in a mere 2:04.41 to take first overall in the event. (The Green and White were credited with five more first-place nods, yet they were in events that Mary Washington swam as exhibitions.)

York tallied eight true second-place finishes in the meet including six individual runner-up times. Bean touched the wall in second in the 100 backstroke with a 56.01 while fellow senior Steve Tobin timed a 1:04.23 in the breaststroke to nab the runner-up slot.

Junior Jack Gottschalk, who has been consistently one of the Spartans' top distance freestyle swimmers, snagged second in the 200 free with a 1:51.51.

In the 200 medley relay, the race which officially kicked-off York's men's season, Andy Woods, Tobin, Ben Hilt, and Alex Diehl combined to take second-place with a time of 1:41.67.

The 500 freestyle saw Steve Yeager take a true second-place finish with a 5:12.74 time, while Steve Mercer carded another true runner-up spot in the 400 IM, touching the wall at 4:35.26. Hilt and Richard Janosky registered true second- and third-place finishes in the 100 butterfly with times of 56.40 and 58.86, respectively.

Woods, Tom DeCoursey, Janosky, and Gottschalk combined their efforts in the meet's final event, the 200 freestyle relay. The four swam to a 1:31.13, which proved good for a true second-place finish.

York also captured four third-place finishes on the evening. DeCoursey notched a 22.67 in the 50 free, Yeager a 10:56.82 in the 1,000 free, Woods a 2:18.56 in the 200 fly, and Tyler Ziegler put together a 2:27.34 in the 200 breaststroke.

The Spartans now have a quick turnaround as they return to competitive action tomorrow, Saturday, November 6. CAC foe Marymount (Va.) and schedule-newcomer Washington & Jefferson visit York for the 2:00 p.m. tri-meet.
