YORK, PA – The York College men’s and women’s swimming team received outstanding news Tuesday as a pair of Spartans were selected as the Capital Athletic Conference’s Swimmers-of-the-week. Junior AJ Bean (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) secured the accolade on the men’s side while freshman Alex Minsky (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) nabbed the women’s honor.
Bean’s award came on the heels of a fantastic performance prior to the Christmas holiday. The Spartan junior established a new pool record in the 200 backstroke, touching the wall at 2:01.18, in the Green and White’s victory over Elizabethtown. Bean’s mark snaps the Steve Fulcher’s previous record set in 2007. Following the Elizabethtown meet, Bean swam to a pair of wins the following day as the Spartans topped Gallaudet and Penn State-Altoona. He triumphed in the 100 backstroke while helping York’s 200 medley relay squad to yet another victory.
Minsky secured the honor following her stellar pre-break performance. The rookie tallied a trio of individual wins while also contributing to one victorious relay over a pair of meets. Minsky took top honors in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.00) and the 200 breaststroke (2:42.79) in York’s non-conference victory over Elizabethtown. The next day, Minsky repeated in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.19) and was a member of the 200 medley relay team.
The women’s swimming team returns to action on Friday, January 15, as the Spartans host Notre Dame (Md.) in a 6:00 p.m. meet at the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center. Both squads return to the pool on Saturday, January 16, with a trip to Ursinus College for a 1:00 p.m. dual meet with the Bears.
