YORK, PA- The York College men’s swim team sent their four
seniors out in style as the Green and White rolled to a 191-68
non-conference victory over Ursinus College on Saturday afternoon
in York. The Spartans improve to 9-1 overall while the Bears fall
Prior to the meet, the Spartans honored their four-man senior class as Matt Jennings (Fairfax, Va./Robinson), Garrett Higgins (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury), Chris Suehr (North Irwin, Pa./Norwin), and Adam Usiack (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) closed out their home careers on Saturday. The foursome has helped lead the Spartans to a cumulative record of 36-4 over the last four seasons.
The Spartans had a very balanced day as they picked up two relay wins and and nine individual wins. Freshman Jack Gottschalk (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) was the only Spartan to pick up multiple wins as he was victorious in the 1000 free and the 500 free. His 1,000 time was 10:45.96 while his 500 time was 5:01.39. Teammate Steve Doemland (Etters, Pa./Red Land) finished second to Gottschalk in the 1000 free with a time of 10:53.44.
Junior Mike Murphy (Farmingdale, N.J./Colts Neck) followed Gottschalk’s win in the 1000 with a victory in the 200 free as he touched the wall in a time of 1:51.09. Teammate Steve Yeager (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) finished second to Murphy with a time of 1:51.41. Sophomore Steve Tobin (Estell Manor, N.J./Holy Spirit) continued the Spartans’ roll as he won the 100 breaststroke in a pool record time of 1:02.82.
Sophomore Ben Hilt (Mt. Joy, Pa./Hempfield) and Murphy finished one-two in the 50 free as Hilt finished with a time of 22.70 while Murphy completed the race with a time of 23.34. Jennings and Andy Demarest (Galloway, N.J./Abesegami) recorded another one-two finish in the 100 freestyle. Jennings touched the wall in a pool record time of 49.05, edging Demarest who clocked in with a time of 50.55. A.J. Bean (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) picked up another of York’s first place finish as he was victorious in the 200 breast stroke. Bean traversed the pool in a time of 2:03.06.
Junior Clark Arnold (York, Pa./Northeastern) and Hilt recorded yet another 1-2 finish for the Spartans in the 100 fly. Arnold notched a time of 54.89 while Hilt completed the race in a time of 57.71. Demarest recorded a win of his own in the 200 IM as he won the race with a time of 2:05.45.
Picking up other second place finishes for the Spartans include Chris Schleicher (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) in the 100 back stroke, Arnold in the 200 fly, and Yeager in the 200 breast stroke.
In the relay races, the foursome of Jennings, Tobin, Arnold, and Gottschalk won the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:42.93. The Spartan foursome of Bean, Alex Diehl (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), Demarest, and Hilt finished second in the race with a time of 3:49.02. The Spartans 400 freestyle relay team of Gottschalk, Hilt, Jennings and Higgins won their race in a time of 3:20.73 while the Spartan “b” team finished second with a time of 3:24.05.
York returns to action on Saturday when they close out their regular season with a trip to Frostburg State. The season-ending meet is slated for a 1:00 pm start.
