FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The York College
men’s swimming team fell 175-87 to the University of Mary
Washington Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference
action. The Spartans receive their first defeat of the year and
drop to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the CAC while the Eagles improve to
3-1 and 3-0 in league play.
The Spartans opened the meet strong as
Matt Jennings (Fairfax, Va./Robinson),
Steven Tobin (Estell Manor, N.J./Holy Spirit),
Clark Arnold (York, Pa./Northeastern), and
Jonathan Gottschalk (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston)
combined to capture the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:43.88.
However, a very talented Mary Washington squad overwhelmed the
green and white to take the decisive team victory.
Gottschalk put on the best performance of
the meet for the Spartans capturing an individual victory and two
individual second place finishes to go along with the relay win.
The freshman took the 500 freestyle event, clocking in at 4:55.10,
as he provided York with the green and white’s only
individual win of the day. Gottschalk grabbed second in both the
1000 freestyle and 400 IM events with times of 10:29.80 and
4:31.92, respectively.
Jennings secured a second and a
third-place finish for the Spartans. The senior recorded second in
the 100 backstroke touching the wall at 55.71 before taking third
in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.10.
AJ Bean (Ijamsville,
Md./Urbana) touched in second for the Spartans in the 200
backstroke, swimming to a time of 2:05.58. James Hicks
(Kingsville, Md./Fallston) gave York another second-place
spot when he clocked a 2:23.52 in the 200 breaststroke.
The 200 relay team of Ben Hilt
(Mt. Joy, Pa./Hempfield), Brian Shaffer
(Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland), Richard Janosky
(Dover, Pa./Dover), and Garrett Higgins (Yardley,
Pa./Pennsbury) gave York their final second-place finish
with a 1:30.72 in the event.
Higgins tallied a pair of third-place
individual finishes in the 100 and 200 freestyle races. In the 100,
Higgins timed a 50.73 while touching the wall at 1:51.92 in the
200.
Hilt notched an individual third in the
100 backstroke, touching the wall at 57.72. Arnold secured third in
the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.72. Freshman Alex Diehl
(Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) also grabbed a third spot
with a 1:04.88 in the 100 breaststroke.
The Spartans will look to return to their
winning ways on Saturday, November 15, when they host a tri-meet
with PSU-Altoona and CAC foe Gallaudet. The action is slated to
begin at 1:00 pm.
