More Records Fall as Spartans Roll
YORK, PA – The York College men’s
swimming team captured their seventh and eighth victories of the
season Saturday afternoon courtesy of a 163-70 result over Goucher
and a 147-56 win against Salisbury. The Spartans improve to a
stellar 8-1 on the season with the home tri-meet victories. The
Gophers drop both results and fall to 2-5 on the year while the
Capital Athletic Conference rival Sea Gulls split to move to

The 200-medley relay, the men’s opening race, belonged to the green and white as York swimmers captured the top two slots. Matt Jennings (Fairfax, Va./Robinson), Steven Tobin (Estell Manor, N.J./Holy Spirit), Ben Hilt (Mt. Joy, Pa./Hempfield), and Jonathan Gottschalk (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) teamed up to take first with a time of 1:40.08, establishing a new pool record in the event. The race’s second slot went to teammates AJ Bean (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana), Alex Diehl (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), Clark Arnold (York, Pa./Northeastern), and Tom DeCoursey (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) as the foursome clocked in a 1:43.79.
Both records that fell in individual races came by identical times of 54.89. Arnold would break the pool record in the 100 butterfly, establishing the new top time of 54.89 in the event. The third pool record fell in the 100 backstroke to Jennings, one of the Spartans’ four seniors. Jennings wrote his name in record books with the other 54.89.
Gottschalk continues his torrid freshman campaign adding yet another win to his rookie total, taking the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:32.66.
Following Gottschalk, Steve Yeager (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) captured another individual win for the Spartan side, edging Salisbury’s Jamie Overholt in a thrilling 200 freestyle. The Spartan sophomore touched the wall at 1:51.05, just three-tenths ahead of Overholt. Yeager backed up his performance in the 200 freestyle by later nabbing the 500 free with a time of 5:01.51.
In the 100 freestyle, Hilt secured first-place points for the home squad, clocking in at 49.72. Junior Andrew Demarest (Galloway, N.J./Abesegami) grabbed first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:05.21.
Hilt, Garrett Higgins (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury), Gottschalk, and Jennings took first in the 200 free relay in the meet’s final event. The group combined to take the race in a time of 1:30.07. Brian Shaffer (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland), DeCoursey, Janosky, and Demarest captured second by clocking in at 1:32.75.
Four Spartans took four individual second-place finishes. Tobin just missed another York victory, clocking a 1:03.51 in the 100 breaststroke, in a mere .17 behind Salisbury’s Mike Ferrari. Tobin also took second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.41.
Adam Willier’s (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) time of 23.46 in the 50 freestyle was the race’s second-best time, while DeCoursey notched second in the 100 freestyle wilth a time of 51.14.
The Spartans now embark on over a month-long break, providing the green and white extensive time to prepare for the latter portion of their season. York next takes to competition on Saturday, January 17, when they host Ursinus in a 1:00 pm meet.
