FROSTBURG, MD – The York College
men’s swim team captured a commanding 215-67 victory over
Frostburg State University Saturday afternoon in Frostburg. The
Spartans complete their regular season slate with a stellar 10-1
mark while the Bobcats fall to 1-9.
The Green and White swept all 14 events on the
day and took second in 13-of-14 races.
A pair of Spartans won two individual races as
Steve Yeager (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) and
Steven Tobin (Estell Manor, N.J./Holy Spirit) each
garnered two individual first-place finishes. Yeager secured the
800 freestyle in 9:18.91 before taking the 200 breaststroke in a
time of 2:37.50. Tobin nabbed his 18 points by touching the wall at
1:12.44 in the 100 breaststroke and 2:24.20 in the 200 IM.
The 200 butterfly belonged to Clark
Arnold (York, Pa./Northeastern) as the junior took the
event in 2:24.13. He followed up that winning performance with a
second-place finish in the 200 IM, coming in with a time of
2:24.87.
As with Arnold, AJ Bean (Ijamsville,
Md./Urbana) and Ben Hilt (Mt. Joy,
Pa./Hempfield) captured both a win and a runner-up result
in their respective events. Bean touched the wall first in the 200
backstroke at 2:17.94 and came in second in the 100 butterfly with
a 1:04.52 time. Hilt edged Bean in the 100 butterfly to take first
with a time of 1:02.84. The sophomore nabbed his second-place
finish in the 100 backstroke earlier in the day.
Five more Spartans took first-place honors in
individual races. Garrett Higgins (Yardley,
Pa./Pennsbury) added nine points to York’s total,
touching the wall first in the 200 freestyle at 2:06.04, a mere
four-hundredths of a second in front of teammate Brian
Shaffer (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) who came in second.
Chris Schleicher (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield)
grabbed the 100 backstroke, clocking a 1:05.96 while Matt
Jennings (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) took first in the 50
freestyle with a time of 25.11. Mike Murphy (Farmingdale,
N.J./Colts Neck) and Jack Gottschalk (Forest Hill,
Md./Fallston) secured two more firsts for the Spartans in
the 100 and 400 freestyle races. Murphy’s 56.16 in the 100
secured first-place points and Gottschalk’s 4:25.82 took the
victory in the 400.
Justin Murphy (Mechanicsville,
Va./Lee-Davis) nabbed two second-place finishes in the 800
freestyle and 200 backstroke respectively. Murphy landed a second
in the 800 with a time of 9:57.78, while he touched the wall a
2:27.34 in the 200 back. Alex Diehl’s (Pottstown,
Pa./Owen J. Roberts) 1:17.43 in the 100 breaststroke
resulted in second-place points as did his 4:36.67 time in the 400
freestyle.
Adam Willier (Pottsville,
Pa./Pottsville Area), Andrew Demarest (Galloway,
N.J./Abesegami), and Jamie Hicks (Kingsville,
Md./Fallston) added runner-up points for the Spartans in
the 50 free, 100 free, and 200 breaststroke, respectively. Willier
clocked a 26.45 in the 50, while Demarest touched the wall at 56.68
in the 100. Hicks took second by way of a 2:41.61 in the 200
breaststroke.
Both relays belonged to the Spartans as the
Green and White took first and second in the 200 medley and 200
freestyle. Jennings, Tobin, Arnold, and Hilt combined for a
first-place 1:53.43 in the medley while Demarest Hicks,
Richard Janosky (Dover, Pa./Dover), and Yeager
timed a second-place 2:01.06. In the meet’s final event,
Gottschalk, Shaffer, Higgins, and Jennings teamed-up to take first
in the 200 free relay with a 1:43.68 time. Mike Murphy, Bean,
Tom DeCoursey (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West)
and Diehl took second in the event with a time of 1:44.90.
With the regular season now complete, the
Spartans turn their sights to the Capital Athletic Conference
Championships. York will travel to St. Mary’s College of
Maryland February 13-15 for the championships.
