Spartans Collect More Records in Championships' Second Day

ST. MARY’S CITY, MD – The York College men’s swim team added three more league honors to their total at the Capital Athletic Conference Championships Saturday at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The Spartans continue to dash school records as four more fell in this evening’s finals.
Senior Matt Jennings (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) put on York’s top performance of the finals establishing a new Spartan record in the 100 backstroke. The senior’s 52.63 time resulted not only in a runner-up finish and second-team all-league honors but more importantly put him under the National B cut line of 52.79.
Senior Steve Tobin (Estell Manor, N.J./Holy Spirit) notched York’s second individual runner-up, and dashed another school record in this evening’s finals as he posted a 1:00.48 time in the 100 breaststroke.
In the 800 freestyle relay, Mike Murphy (Farmingdale, N.J./Colts Neck), Steve Yeager (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson), Garrett Higgins (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury), and Jack Gottschalk (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) teamed up to break another school record. The group, who combined to take second in the race, clocked in at 7:11.05 to establish a new school mark.
The 200 medley relay squad of Jennings, Tobin, Clark Arnold (York, Pa./Northeastern), and Ben Hilt (Mt. Joy, Pa./Hempfield) added yet another all-league honor to York’s total for this year’s championships. The foursome’s time of 1:36.35 resulted in a second-place finish for the event.
A pair of Spartans performed well in the 200 freestyle, as both Gottschalk and Murphy broke York’s previous best in the event. Gottschalk established a new school best earlier in the day during the preliminaries before Murphy set a new mark during the finals. In those finals, Murphy touched the wall in fourth at 1:44.80 just before Gottschalk’s final time of 1:45.64.
Arnold and sophomore AJ Bean (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) added two more fourth-place finishes for the Green and White. Arnold posted a 53.05 in the 100 butterfly while Bean clocked in at 55.26.
The Spartans enter Sunday’s final day of competition sitting in second-place as a team, 140 points behind Mary Washington. The championships finish up with the 1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, and 400 freestyle relay.
