Spartans Cruise Past Marymount 159-74
ARLINGTON, VA – The York College
men’s swimming team captured their second win in as many
tries this season, posting a commanding 159-74 victory over Capital
Athletic Conference foe Marymount on Saturday in Arlington, Va. The
Spartans improve to 2-0 on the year with both wins coming in
conference action while the Saints drop their first meet of the
season and stand at 0-1.
The Spartans, who fell to Marymount last season, won nine events during the meet including seven individual races and both the 400 medley and 400 freestyle relays.
Sophomore Steve Yeager (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) posted two victories at Marymount, taking the 200 and 500 freestyle events. Yeager’s 1:51.36 was the best mark in the 200 while his 5:06.38 was tops in the 500.
Fellow sophomore Steven Tobin (Estell Manor, N.J./Holy Spirit) equaled Yeager’s two victories with a pair of his own, taking the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. In the 100, Tobin clocked a 1:05.36 and then registered a 2:29.72 in the 200.
Freshman Jonathan Gottschalk (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) continued the torrid start to his collegiate career grabbing a pair of individual wins. He won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:24.94 and the 400 IM clocking in at 4:31.24.
Matthew Jennings (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) took first in the 100 backstroke touching the wall at 55.47. The senior also notched second place finishes in the 50 and 100 freestyle races clocking times of 22.91 and 50.87 respectively.
Junior Clark Arnold (York, Pa./Northeastern) registered a victory in 100 butterfly with a time of 55.87 slipping by Saint Greg Murtha, who had taken first in the both 50 and 100 freestyle, by a mere 11 hundredths of a second. Arnold also nabbed a second place time in the 200 clocking a 2:10.87.
Sophomore AJ Bean (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) secured his win in the 200 backstroke with a 2:07.35.
Senior Garrett Higgins (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) captured second in the 200 freestyle finishing with a time of 1:53.61. Juniors Andrew Demarest (Galloway, N.J./Abesegami) and Adam Willier (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) also grabbed second-place spots as Demarest came in second in the 400 IM with a 4:44.88 and Willier took runner-up in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:32.22.
A pair of sophomores and freshman also tallied second-place finishes for the Spartans. Ben Hilt’s (Mt. Joy, Pa./Hempfield) 58.48 in the 100 backstroke was the race’s second-best time while Chris Schleicher (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) tabbed a 2:10.87 in the 200 backstroke. Rookie Alex Diehl (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) finished in second with a 1:05.89 in the 100 breaststroke.
The green and white returns to the pool on Wednesday, November 5, when they travel to Elizabethtown. The Spartans and Blue Jays square-off in a 6:00 pm non-conference tilt.
