Spartans Cruise to Win on Senior Day
YORK, PA-The York College men’s swim team closed out their 2007-08 home schedule with a 160-90 non-conference victory over Misericordia University on Saturday afternoon in York. The Spartans improve to 8-2 with the win while the Cougars fall to 4-5.
The green and white began the day with a sweep of the 200 medley relay with the foursome of Matt Jennings (Fairfax, Va./Robinson), Steve Tobin (Estell Manor, N.J./Holy Spirit), Mike Murphy (Farmingdale, N.J./Colts Neck), and Steven Fulcher (Columbia, Md./Calvert Hall) capturing the top spot with a time of 1:40.96.
Sophomore Steven Doemland (Etters, Pa./Red Land) recorded the Spartans’ next win as he touched the wall first in the 1000 freestyle, clocking in with a time of 10:47.82. Freshman Matt Kempel (Millington, Md./Queen Anne’s County) finished third in the event with a time of 11:12.73.
The Spartans swept the top three spots in the 200 freestyle led by Garrett Higgins (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) as the junior won the race with a time of 1:52.59. That edged teammates A.J. Bean (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) who finished second with a time of 1:54.09 and Andrew Demarest (Galloway, N.J./Abesegami) who finished third with a time of 1:54.32. Freshman Ben Hilt (Mt. Joy, Pa./Hempfield) earned nine points for the Spartans in the 100 backstroke, winning the event with a time of 57.72.
The green and white earned a top four sweep in the 100 breaststroke as Tobin won the race with a time of 1:03.24. Adam Willier (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) placed second, Collin Brown (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) finished third while Nate Welsh (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) came in fourth for YCP.
Sophomore Clark Arnold (York, Pa./Northeastern) rolled to a win in the 200 butterfly as the Spartan lead continue to grow. Arnold notched a time of 2:10.45 in the race.
Fulcher made his senior day memorable with a win in the 50 free as he edged teammate Jennings 22.21 to 22.69 in the race. Hilt picked up his second win of the day with a victory in the 100 free, touching the wall in a time of 51.18. Demarest finished second to Hilt with a time of 51.27.
The green and white recorded another sweep of the top three spots in the 200 backstroke as Bean won the event with a time of 2:05.09 followed by Justin Murphy (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) in second and Chris Suehr (North Irwin, Pa./Norwin) in third. Tobin and Willier finished second and third in the 200 breaststroke, picking up a combined seven points for YCP.
Doemland notched his second win of the day as he won the 500 free with a time of 5:12.36. Kempel finished third in the race for the green and white.
Mike Murphy recorded a win in the 100 butterfly while Bean picked up his third top-two finish as he placed second. Murphy’s time was 57.54 while Bean finished just .03 seconds back of Murphy.
The Spartans swam the final two events as exhibition as the meet was well in hand.
The green and white return to action on Friday night as they travel to Ursinus to face the Bears in their final regular season meet of the year. The action kicks off Friday night at 6:00 pm.
