FREDERICK, MD-The York College men’s swim team opened their campaign with a strong 117-55 Capital Athletic Conference victory at Hood College on Saturday afternoon in Frederick, MD. The Spartans, who have now won 19 consecutive meets dating back to October 29, 2005, improve to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the league. The Blazers fall to 0-1 and 0-1 in the league.
The Spartans posted wins in six individual events and one relay race. The green and white also recorded five individual seconds and one runner-up finish in a relay. York swam the final three events as exhibition.
Senior Steven Fulcher (Columbia, Md./Calvert Hall) notched two individual wins for the day. He won the 50 free, notching a time of 22.47 which edged teammate Chris Doemland (Etters, Pa./Red Land) who finished with a time of 22.84. Fulcher also won the 100 free with a time of 49.50 as he beat out teammate Matthew Jennings (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) who was the runner-up with a time of 50.00.
Andrew Demarest (Galloway, N.J./Abesegami) won the 200 free as he touched the wall in a time of 1:53.94. Freshman Steven Tobin (Estell Manor, N.J./Holy Spirit) earned a win in the 200 IM as he recorded a time of 2:10.56. Teammate Michael Murphy (Farmingdale, N.J./Colts Neck) was the runner up in the event as he finished just over two seconds back of Tobin. Sophomore Clark Arnold (York, Pa./Northeastern) won the 200 fly as he cruised to a time of 2:16.43 while freshman Garrett Wampler (York, Pa./West York) finished second with a time of 2:26.25. Freshman A.J. Bean (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) recorded York’s final first of the day with a win in the 200 backstroke, notching a time of 2:06.50.
The 200 relay team of Bean, Ben Hilt (Mt. Joy, Pa./Hempfield), Chris Doemland, and Demarest captured the Spartans’ relay win as they finished with a time of 1:38.75. That time bested the Spartans’ other relay team in the event as the foursome of Chris Suehr (North Irwin, Pa./Norwis), Tobin, Arnold, and Jennings combined to record a time of 1:44.32.
Sophomore Stephen Doemland (Etters, Pa./Red Land) recorded one of York’s second place finishes as he was second in the 1000 free with a time of 11:19.28.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, November 3 when they host Marymount and Gallaudet in a tri-meet. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm.
