Spartans Continue Strong Showing at 2008 CAC Championships
ST. MARY’S, MD-The York College men’s swim team continued their strong showing at the 2008 Capital Athletic Conference championships on Saturday at St. Mary’s City, MD. The Spartans remain in second place in the seven team field as they have accumulated 417 points. They have widened their lead over third place Marymount to 120 points. The Spartans still remain behind Mary Washington in the race for the team championship as the Eagles have notched 575.5 team points through two days of the championships.
Senior Steven Fulcher (Columbia, Md./Calvert Hall) continued his outstanding championship weekend with another individual win and another relay victory. Fulcher won the 100 backstroke in a school and meet record time of 52.8. That time narrowly missed an NCAA provisional cut for the national championship meet. Fulcher then teamed with Matthew Jennings (Fairfax, Va./Robinson), Steve Tobin (Estell Manor, N.J./Holy Spirit), and Clark Arnold (York, Pa./Northeastern) to win the 200 medley relay in a school record time of 1:35.70. Fulcher has now picked up two individual wins and two relay victories as he is ending his career in stellar fashion.
In Fulcher’s 100 backstroke win, Jennings picked up a second place finish as he recorded a time of 53.26. A.J. Bean (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) finished fifth (56.24) and Benjamin Hilt (Mt. Joy, Pa./Hempfield) finished sixth (56.32) in the same event as York picked up a whopping 75 points in the 100 backstroke as they had six of the top 16 finishers.
The foursome of Bean, Andrew Demarest (Galloway,
N.J./Abesegami), Garrett Higgins (Yardley,
Pa./Pennsbury), and Stephen Doemland (Etters,
Pa./Red Land) combined to finish second in the 800
freestyle with a time of 7:18.96, earning them second-team All-CAC
The Spartans had a number of strong finishers in other events. In the 400 IM, Demarest finished fourth (4:26.25) and Daniel Kresser (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills Regional) placed eighth (4:41.48). In the 100 fly, Arnold finished fifth, Hilt finished ninth and Michael Murphy (Farmingdale, N.J./Colts Neck) placed 11th. Doemland placed fifth in the 200 free while teammate Higgins finished ninth in the same event.
York had three swimmers place in the top 14 of the 100 breaststroke. Tobin placed third with a time of 1:01.28 while Adam Willier (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) placed 13th and Collin Brown (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) finished 14th.
The action resumes on Sunday morning with the morning trials at 10:00 am followed by the night finals beginning at 6:00 pm.
