ST. MARY’S CITY, MD - The York College men’s swim team concluded their 2007-08 campaign with a second place finish at the Capital Athletic Conference championships at St. Mary’s College in St. Mary’s City, MD. The Spartans accumulated 606 points as they were runner-up to perennial champion Mary Washington. The Eagles finished the championships with 831.5 points. York finished 129 points ahead of Salisbury University as the Sea Gulls finished third in the seven team field. Marymount (431) finished fourth followed by St. Mary’s (329.5), Gallaudet, and Hood.
Spartan senior Steven Fulcher (Columbia, Md./Calvert Hall) captured the highest honor at the meet as he earned the 2008 CAC Male Swimmer-of-the-Year. At the championships, Fulcher earned two individual wins (50 free and 100 backstroke), an individual second (200 backstroke) and was a member of three relay wins. He is the first swimmer in school history to earn the conference swimmer of the year award.
The Sunday finals began for the Spartans with a third place finish from sophomore Stephen Doemland (Etters, Pa./Red Land) in the 1650 free. Doemland, who had a very solid championship weekend, touched the wall in a school-record time of 17:13.08.
Fulcher picked up a second place finish in the 200 backstroke as he traversed the pool in a school-record time of 1:55.48. Teammate AJ Bean (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) placed sixth in the race as he notched a time of 2:01.01.
The green and white was well represented in the 100 free as Matt Jennings (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) finished third and Garrett Higgins (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) finished eighth. Jennings’ time was 47.80 while Higgins notched a time of 50.27.
Freshman Steven Tobin (Estell Manor, N.J./Holy Spirit) finished fourth in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:16.78.
Sophomore Clark Arnold (York, Pa./Northeastern) and Bean earned top tens in the 200 fly. Arnold finished fifth with a school-record time of 2:01.14 while Bean placed ninth, recording a time of 2:03.18.
The 400 freestyle relay team of Jennings, Ben Hilt (Mt. Joy, Pa./Hempfield), Michael Murphy (Farmingdale, N.J./Colts Neck), and Fulcher closed out the championships in grand style with a win in the race. The foursome combined to post a time of 3:11.45.
The Spartans return a bulk of their team next year but will lose Fulcher as he is the lone senior they will lose to graduation. The Spartans finished the dual meet season with a mark of 9-2. During Fulcher’s four years in the Spartan pool, York finished with a dual meet mark of 34-5 and a pair of CAC runner-up finishes.
