COLLEGEVILLE, PA-The York College men’s swim team closed out their 2007-08 regular season schedule with a 131-69 non-conference victory over Ursinus College on Friday night in Collegeville, PA. The Spartans improve to 9-2 with the win while the Bears fall to 2-7 for the campaign.
The green and white began the meet with a win the 200 medley relay. The Spartan foursome of Matt Jennings (Fairfax, Va./Robinson), Steve Tobin (Estell Manor, N.J./Holy Spirit), Clark Arnold (York, Pa./Northeastern), and Steven Fulcher (Columbia, Md./Calvert Hall) combined to post a time of 1:41.17, more than two seconds better than the second place squad from Ursinus.
Ursinus’s Robert Scheinfield won the 1,000 free with Spartan Chris Schleicher (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) picking up a second place finish, touching the all in a time of 11:11.95. Ursinus posted a win in the 200 free but Steven Doemland (Etters, Pa./Red Land), A.J. Bean (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana), and Garrett Higgins (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) finished two-three-four to earn valuable points for York.
Arnold and Chris Suehr (North Irwin, Pa./Norwin) placed first and second in the 50 free as Arnold finished with a time of 23.32 and Suehr notched a time of 23.45.
Ursinus won the 200 IM but again, the Spartans rounded out the top four finishers as Jennings placed second, Mike Murphy (Farmingdale, N.J./Colts Neck) finished third, and Adam Usciak (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) placed fourth.
Freshman Ben Hilt (Mt. Joy, Pa./Hempfield) won the 100 fly as he finished the race with a time of 58.58.
Fulcher led a strong Spartan showing in the 100 free as he won the event with a blistering time of 49.29. Andrew Demarest (Galloway, N.J./Abesegami) finished second with a time of 50.55 while Dan Kresser (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills Regional) placed third with a time of 53.21.
Ursinus recorded a first place finish in the 100 backstroke but York captured the next three places for nine points. Schleicher notched his second runner-up finish of the day.
Doemland posted a win in the 500 free with a time of 5:05.07, edging Ursinus’ Lloyd Tannenbaum by .3 seconds.
York finished the individual events with another two through four finish in the 100 breaststroke.
The Spartans completed the day with a sweep of the top two spots in the 200 freestyle relay. The top squad of Jennings, Arnold, Hilt and Fulcher rolled to a finish of 1:30.05.
The Spartans are now off until they travel to St. Mary’s College for the Capital Athletic Conference championships on February 15-17.
