Pink Day Brings Victories for Spartan Men
YORK, Pa. – The York College men's swimming team captured five event victories Saturday afternoon during the Spartans' first "Pink Day" in support of breast cancer awareness. The Green and White, who wore pink and black suits and pink swim caps, bested both visiting Goucher 134-70 and Capital Athletic Conference foe Salisbury 124-80. The two commanding triumphs puts the York squad at 7-4 on the season including a 4-1 mark in CAC action.
Junior standout Jack Gottschalk posted two of York's five triumphs as he took both the 200 and 500 freestyle events. He first snagged the 200 with a 1:50.41 before later tallying a victorious 5:10.27 in the 500.
Steve Yeager secured the Green and White's first win of the afternoon by touching the wall first in the 1,000 freestyle. The senior swam to a 10:56.79 to capture the victory.
Fellow senior Benjamin Hilt won the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.37 while Andy Woods, one of York's talented sophomores, posted a 55.16 to nab the 100 butterfly.
In addition to their respective first-place finishes, both Yeager and Hilt each snagged second-place nods. Yeager took the runner-up spot in the 500 freestyle as he recorded a 5:12.27. Hilt's second came in the 100 freestyle where he posted a 50.58.
The Spartans secured five additional second-place finishes, including both relay events. Steve Mercer came in second in the 200 IM with a 2:03.39 as that time marks the sophomore's personal best in the event. Senior Matt Kempel recorded an 11:07.27 in the 1,000 while Jamie Hicks placed second in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:05.16.
The 400 medley relay, saw AJ Bean, Steve Tobin, Woods, and Alex Diehl combine for a 3:44.99 to take second. The meet's final event, the 400 freestyle relay, saw the crew of Yeager, Mercer, Thomas DeCoursey, and Hilt put up a 3:22.72 for their runner-up finish.
The Spartans will now turn their focus to training and improvement during the next month as the Green and White do not return to meet action until January 15. York is set to host Ursinus on that Saturday as they celebrate Senior Day. The Spartans will recognize their seven seniors – Bean, DeCoursey, Hilt, Kempel, Chris Schleicher, Tobin, and Yeager – prior to the meet.
