Gottschalk, Arnold Break Records as Spartans Cruise to Victory
YORK, PA – Freshman Jonathan
Gottschalk (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) and junior
Clark Arnold (York, Pa./Northeastern) put in
record-breaking performances Saturday afternoon, as the York
College men’s swimming team handled Capital Athletic
Conference foe St. Mary’s 147-58. With the victory, the
Spartans improve to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the CAC while the
Seahawks fall to 2-4 and 1-3 in league action.
Gottschalk continues to storm through his
rookie season, as he tallied a pair of victories each in record
time. The freshman first took the 200 freestyle in a time of
1:47.30, establishing new pool and school marks for the event.
Gottschalk later broke the pool record in the 100 freestyle when he
touched the wall first with a quick 49.11.
The 100 butterfly belonged to Arnold. The
junior paced out a new pool record in the event with a time of
54.91.
Along with the exploits of Gottschalk and
Arnold, four additional Spartans picked up individual victories
against the Seahawks. AJ Bean (Ijamsville,
Md./Urbana) clocked in at 56.62 in the 100 backstroke,
while fellow sophomore Steven Tobin (Estell Manor,
N.J./Holy Spirit) captured another individual win in the
100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.27.
Sophomore Steve Yeager (Sinking
Spring, Pa./Wilson), who came in just behind Tobin in the
100 breaststroke with a 1:04.99, secured an individual victory in
the 1,000 freestyle touching the wall at 10:24.73. Ben Hilt
(Mt. Joy, Pa./Hempfield) captured first in the 50
freestyle, traversing the event in a time of 22.24. Hilt then took
second in the 100 backstroke with a 58.19.
Matt Kempel (Millington, Md./Queen
Anne's County), Andrew Demarest (Galloway,
N.J./Abesegami), and Steve Doemland (Etters,
Pa./Red Land) each recorded individual second-place
finishes for the green and white. Kempel grabbed the second slot in
the 1,000 free with a time of 10:56.64. Demarest’s second
came in the 400 IM, touching the wall at 4:35.56 and Doemland took
the runner-up slot in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:12.73.
The Spartans took the top two spots in
both the 400 medley and 400 freestyle relays. The group of Bean,
Tobin, Arnold, and Brian Shaffer (Schnecksville,
Pa./Parkland) found victory in the 400 medley by way of a
3:44.66 time. Gottschalk, Mike Murphy (Farmingdale,
N.J./Colts Neck), Shaffer and Hilt teamed up in the 400
free to win with a time of 3:23.20.
After a week away from competition, the
Spartans will return to action on Saturday, December 6, as hosts of
their second tri-meet of the season. York will take on Salisbury
and Goucher at 1:00 pm from the York College Natatorium.
