Murphy Takes 100 Free Title as Spartans Finish Second
ST. MARY’S CITY, MD – The York
College men’s swim team completed the Capital Athletic
Conference Championships Sunday evening, finishing second out of
seven squads with 683 points, just 168.5 points behind Mary
Washington. The Green and White broke four additional records
Sunday and posted their first event win of the meet.
Junior Mike Murphy
(Farmingdale, N.J./Colts Neck) propelled his
6’7” frame to victory in the 100 freestyle with a time
of 47.14, edging Marymount’s Greg Murtha by a mere twelve
hundredths-of-a-second. Teammate Matt Jennings (Fairfax,
Va./Robinson) touched the wall just behind Murtha, as he
recorded a time of 47.48.
Freshman Jack Gottschalk
(Forest Hill, Md./Fallston), who made a huge impact on the
Spartan program throughout the season, posted two more individual
records Sunday evening. Both marks came in the same race, the 1,650
freestyle. Gottschalk pierced through the first 1,000 of the event
in a school-record time of 10:04.05 while completing the entire
1,650 in another school-best 16:46.14 as he notched a third place
finish.
Junior Steve Tobin (Estell
Manor, N.J./Holy Spirit) and sophomore Clark
Arnold (York, Pa./Northeastern) each put together
school-record times of their own. Tobin’s 2:16.71 in the 200
breaststroke establishes a new mark and allowed him to finish third
overall. In the 200 butterfly, Arnold registered his school-record
by touching the wall at 1:59.66, taking fifth in the race.
Sophomore AJ Bean
(Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) received All-CAC honors earlier
in the evening as he finished second in the 200 backstroke with a
time of 1:58.41.
The Green and White finished the
league championships by grabbing second in the 400 freestyle relay.
Murphy, Ben Hilt (Mt. Joy, Pa./Hempfield),
Gottschalk, and Jennings combined to register a time of 3:10.99.
Each of the Spartans’ relay squads finished in a strong
second-place throughout the weekend’s five relays.
Overall, York broke ten school
records during the championships, including eight individual
marks.
The Spartans now bid farewell to
their four seniors Garrett Higgins (Yardley,
Pa./Pennsbury), Jennings, Chris Suehr (North
Irwin, Pa./Norwin), and Adam Usciak (Lancaster,
Pa./Hempfield). Over the past four years, the Green and
White have posted a sparkling 37-4 record, including a flawless
16-0 in non-conference action, and an impressive 21-4 mark in the
CAC.
