YORK, PA – The York College men's soccer team celebrated their 2013 senior day in impressive fashion as the Spartans blanked Southern Virginia 5-0 in non-conference action on a sunny but breezy Saturday in York.
The Spartans, who are ranked 8th in the d3soccer.com poll and 20th in the NSCAA poll, improve to 15-2 overall. The Knights fall to 1-15-1 with the loss.
The Green and White wasted little in getting on the board as they earned a corner kick in the 5th minute. The kick was served into the box and pinged around until it was cleared out to freshman Charlie Versen (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./The Masters) at the top of the box. Versen collected the loose ball and ripped an absolute bullet inside the right post for the opening goal. The tally was Versen's first career goal.
The Spartans had a load of opportunities in the first half but SVU's Scott Zaring kept the Green and White off the board over the remaining 39 minutes of the half. York fired off 20 first half shots as they spent a majority of the half in the Knights' defensive third.
The second half scoring opened just 1:18 into the half as Taylor Brummitt (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) ripped a centering pass into the box. The ball hit off a Southern Virginia defender and caromed into the back of the net for an own goal as the York led grew to 2-0.
York put the game out of reach in the 72nd minute when senior Jake Hower (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) collected a loose ball on the left flank and delivered a beautiful centering pass to sophomore Peter Lundgaard (Greenville, Del./Salesianum). Lundgaard redirected the pass into the net for his first goal of the season.
Hower had an almost identical play just a minute and a half later as he delivered another pass, this one to Brendan Saberton (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum), as Saberton finished the assist with York's fourth goal.
Senior Aaron Beale (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) capped the scoring in the 83rd minute. Hower drilled the corner kick to Tobi Iguade (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) who fed Beale with a pass that Beale finished for his second goal of the year.
York finished the game with a 37-3 edge in total shots including a 17-3 margin in shots on goal. The Spartans also had a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman Charlie Johnson (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) earned his first collegiate start and picked up the win as he played 65:31 of shutout soccer. Johnson earned three saves in the victory. Senior Tanner Good (Navron, Pa./Pequea Valley) chipped in on the clean sheet as he played a flawless 24:29 in net.
Zaring suffered the loss as he allowed five goals in his 90 minutes in cage. Zaring recorded 12 saves for the Knights.
The Spartans also got good news earlier in the day as they locked up a first round bye in the upcoming Capital Athletic Conference tournament by the result of other conference action on Saturday. The Green and White will receive an opening round bye and host a conference tournament semifinal game on Wednesday, November 6.
The Spartans close out their season on Wednesday afternoon when they host Frostburg State University on Wednesday afternoon in their regular season finale. Game time at Graham Field is set for 4:00 pm.
