ASTON, PA – The York College men's soccer team notched their fourth straight win and second straight shutout as the Spartans downed the Neumann University Knights 3-0 in a non-conference contest on Saturday in Aston, Pa.
The Spartans improve to 7-1-1 overall while the Knights fall to 3-3-2.
The offense attacks were lacking early on as the first shot of the game didn't come until there were already five minutes elapsed on the clock. The Spartans' first shot didn't come until over ten minutes into the game.
The Spartans finally got clicking midway through the half as senior Antonio Bua (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) hit the post in the 20th minute. The Spartans continued to pressure the Knight defense until freshman Eli Bjerk (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) converted a chance in the 33rd minute to put the Spartans up 1-0. The goal was the first collegiate tally for Bjerk.
The Green and White wasted little time in adding to the lead as junior Taylor Brummitt (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) drilled home his fourth goal of the season off a pass from fellow junior Aaron Beale (Baltimore, Md./Annapolis). The goal came in the 42nd minute and gave York the 2-0 cushion heading to the break.
York got an insurance goal in the 73rd minute as junior Chris Weaver (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) took a Brummitt pass and converted the goal, giving York their final three-goal margin of victory.
The Spartans ended the game with a 15-11 edge in total shots while both teams had six shots on goal. The Knights held a slight 4-3 margin in corner kicks while both teams had 19 fouls.
Senior Jesse Derksen (York, Pa./Susquehannock) earned the win as he played 68:02 of scoreless soccer. He recorded three saves for York. Freshman Leonardo Romero (Philadelphia, Pa./LaSalle College) played the final 21:58 and he also made three saves to preserve the clean sheet.
